    Hey Tanner,
    Here is the process I use to create custom shapes.

    1. grab a really textured image of rocks or something from nature.
    2. Do the whole black and white contrast thing.. using either the levels or using the cutout filter. may have to dig into the controls to get a good black and white.
    3.Select the black part of the image.
    4.Open the Paths tab, and on the right drop down menu... select Make Path..
    5. Type in 2.0 or whatever you find works for you.. 1.0 usually takes a while.
    6. With that selected, go over to the Edit menu...drop down to where it says Define Custom shape. Should not be greyed out.
    7. Click that and it should pop up and window and you can name the new shape.

    1. To use these and get the tiny shapes working.. makes sure that when you drop these custom shapes.. that it is only dropping pixels and not paths.. there are a few buttons at the top that allow this.. play around with them. I can't remember offhand which one does what.
    2. Next.. grab a shape and start throwing down.. you'll get the hang of it..

    Neat stuff! Never even new custom shapes existed. Gave it a go, posted below. I feel like it has the ability to turn into an overly busy image very quickly. I should try painting over the "skeleton" to knock back more areas and create more negative space and areas where the detail isn't so strong. Thanks Chawdog for breaking it down like that. Anyone not sure what to do after Chawdog's explanation, in the toolbar is a shape, hold it to see the other tool options and a little blob shape tool at the bottom is the "custom shape tool" you can then select your new shape and start applying with that tool.
