Can someone clarify what a speed painting is?

I'm not talking about a time lapse video.

Are speed paintings imagined or are they based off reference?

A speed painting is just that, a painting done in ~30 minutes or so.

There isn't really a strict definition, simply that it is done rapidly with little setup or polish (i.e. no detailed drawings, no blending), may or may not use reference, and is popular with digital painting but not unheard of in traditional mediums.

Pretty much what Anid Maro said, except I think most people would consider something under 2 hours to be a speed paint (not 30 minutes).

It depends of the artist. If someone usually needs 20 hours to complete a painting, 2 hours will be speed painting for him. A 2 hours long time lapse video is not a speed painting if the actual painting was done in 20 hours. I'm not sure if you see what i mean, but that's my definition for "speed painting". Speeding the video does not make it speed painting. Another factor to consider is that it's usually done in one sitting and without much planning. Something like a bit more detailed sketch, but still not a complete painting in terms of the quality that the artist is usually capable of.

What Vari said, I think. Speed is relative, so whatever is speedy for you would be a speed painting.

True, I was just throwing out a number but the speed really is relative to the medium and the artist.
