File Extension Library - What is a File Extension?

Want to know what a file extension is?
File extensions are the short suffixes that appear after the filename.
They are used to indicate the file type. In their early use, file extensions were used to indicate the generic type of a file.
For example, .txt was used for a text file, and file extension .gfx for a graphics file.
However, over time, file extensions have become connected with certain programs or even versions of that program.
A .doc file indicates a Microsoft Word document, while a .docx file extension means it was created using Word 2007 or a later version.

unless there's a GREAT link coming up for file extension handling software, I guess this is just a case of someone who really wanted to inform the world of this.

    Thought this was common knowledge?

Then again, I also don't think being able to navigate DOS is anything special. Maybe I'm just showing my age.

I'll take four pounds of .txt, a quarter pound of .pdf, two pounds of .docx, and a gallon of liquid .jpeg myself.
