I posted this on the ImagineFX forums for some critiques and they said that there were some anatomy problems mainly the stiff pose and wonky arm muscles. Could any experts paint on top of my drawing to show me where I am going wrong please?

Hi there, I'm no expert but the main apparent problem I see there is with the arms, the shading is done in a way that the biceps and triceps look like they have been swapped around.
Ok, so I am not too terribly used to the paint over thing. So here goes, the red lines is what you had in your image, the blue lines are just a really quick sketch of how you can make the image more dynamic. Just a thought for you.
I highly recommend Dynamic Anatomy and Dynamic Figure Drawing by Burne Hogarth. Plus drawing from life, of course! (Or photos, if you don't happen to have a hippy bodybuilder around.)

A pose can be symmetrical and iconic (what you are going for here) and still be dynamic. There is (and has to be) "action" even in a still pose.

Why is he apparently holding his weapon and shield upside down?
Why did people leave their weapons in the chests of their opponents?
Why are the trees making a rainbow arc at the top?
I do like the lighting/blending you have going in the background.
Anatomy books aren't going to help you draw more dynamic poses. Principles of composition and maybe even some animation might be good areas to explore in order to strengthen your work.
Find artists who's work appeals to you and do studies of their art being mindful of how they pose their figures and why.
...my humble and uneducated opinion.
