There is no single answer to your question...Like all things in life, becoming a halfway decent designer requires a lot of work and study. All the issues you say you're having are essentially separate elements of design that require understanding to a nominal degree to be able to coalesce into a solid final piece.
Study, learn, and do. Only way to get better.

The majority of elements involved fall under composition i suppose.
Get a better understanding of that much, and one should pretty much be able to break it down from there as they get a deeper understanding.

I own it. Very good book. Google it and read a sample.

To me this is a universal principle of art. Saying as much as possible with a minimum of means."-John Huston, Director

man, graphic design works with the visual form. As form we mean:
dots, lines, shapes, color, textures, movement. this is the basic of the visual language.
then we study semiothyics (symbols and significations), typography, drawing, photography and this kind of stuff.
to be a great design, u must know how to generate creative visual ideas using all this stuff above. u also dont need to draw, take shots, u can pay somoene to do it, but u need to know how to combine these stuff XD

I suppose the main elements of graphic design are typography, composition, and color. I think Kandinsky's Point, Line and Plane is a great read. Robert Bringhurts's book on Typography is considered the Type bible. Typography is something that is almost endless, from learning about typefaces to page layout to type as form.
However, getting into the printing side of things there are a lot more elements to design that have to be dealt with like bleeds and crops, the technical side that doesn't have to do so much with the artistic side of it.

hmmm surprised no one really mentioned all the basic elements and principles yet.
There are the elements of design:
And the principles of design:
Get to know them well! Understand each on an individual level and how designers use them together. You will be successful if you have a solid understanding of the fundamentals.
