Spartan Camp #155 - 50 gestures + Optional "Free Choice Anatomy Study"

Spartan Camp #155 - 50 gestures + Optional "Free Choice Anatomy Study"

The aim is to produce 50 gestures by Sunday the 24th of October.

    - The gestures can be of anything, human, animal, cavorting capybaras.... You can draw full figures, but you can also go for heads, arms, eyes, or anything specific. All media can be used, both digital or traditional. Coloured or black/white. Quick scribbles or long studies. Imagination or referenced. Clothed or nude. Specifics are up to you!

    - In addition to this, participants can choose to do an Optional "Free Choice Anatomy Study", in any medium.
Additional notes on this weeks’ Optional Study: Any part/area/subject of the body allowed. You may go for anything you'd like, or anything you think requires some practice. Colour, medium, time frame, any specifics are up to you! Have fun!

50 poses is a challenge, but don't hurry or stress yourself reaching it! Focus on drawing, as practising is the main goal of this exercise.

Critting each other is highly encouraged!! Share constructive criticism, reference and resources!! Let's help each other get better!

Come on soldiers! Flex those muscles!!

Eiki: I enjoyed your animal studies. I think my favorite is the running horse on the second page. I am far from being an expert at scanning... but so far, my favorite adjustment in Photoshop CS4 is Image-->Adjustments-->Levels...

Here is my first set of 60 second gestures. I did these using Sketchbook Express. It took me a bit to get the hang of my tablet again. I need to practice with it more.

Ok, I'm getting addicted to this ;p

Anthis: thanks for the feedback on the last one!
Eiki: cool poses, I like horses in the first one and that colourful bird.
Karshia: nice start, post some more!

Posemaniacs, 30 sec. I think I'll try some 2-5 min poses next.

Eiki- Animals! I'd agree those horses are pretty good, they're 'known' to be tough. Great to see a lot of different species though. Its interesting how each separate pose seems to capture a different 'feel'. Whether it be movement, value or texture. I can see you 'wrap' your lines around the form. Also feel free to use smooth, organic lines for this. I use a scanner for mine, but taking photographs is fine. You could try and improve light source placement. They look good though.

Karshia- Haven't heard of the program you use, I'm a photoshop user myself. The tablet can be challenging, still doesn't feel natural to me. However, I think it is reassuring to know that many professionals simply use default round brushes. So in the end, it's all about drawing itself. Nice going though. See if you can take some chances with longer, fluid lines. Instead of small marks tied together. Probably just a matter of practice. Sometimes its just about pushing yourself out of a 'comfort zone'. nice!

brambor- Nice and smooth! You did well in capturing some of the major shapes. Very economically ;P. That's the nice thing about timed posemaniacs. Careful with those pelvises, especially the male ones. They get too small occasionally. They're supposed to be about as wide as the chest, but shorter. Pelvic area can be tough (but important!). It is a fairly solid, almost square mass though, which can be helpful. Good stuff!

    First batch!
    1st scan posemaniacs left handed.
2nd also posemaniacs, trying some different approaches
    3rd imagination.

Eiki: you're getting better at this, keep it coming!
Anthis: wow, your left-handed drawings look way better than my right-handed. Nice work on pose-maniacs (was it random pose viewer or you gave yourself a time limit?). And of course you're right about male pelvises, they're indeed important ;p I'll pay more attention.

I tried some shading and discovered that skype conversations are not beneficial for gesture drawings. I crossed out those most crappy.

Here are the rest of my gestures. I really wanted to do the optional study this week, just never found the time.

These are mostly studies from Michael Hampton. 30s-60s

echo7925 - I like the first ones a lot, using pen is a great practice. The 10sec ones are nice too, but always really tough. If you run out of space while doing a pose, don't be afraid to draw right trough(or behind) another pose. To avoid having to 'cram' things in. Nice to see you again! Always a pain to be forced away from what you like. Hope to see some figures of your own, you're doing well on these studies!
