    round #191 Arctic War Beast

    topic:

    round #191 Arctic War Beast

On a frozen planet, where the temperatures are so low that it's covered in snow and ice. There reside 2 feuding clans that will stop at nothing in order to eradicate the other. This quest for dominance has led the clans to breed, train, and militarize a native creature of the their world into a deadly war beast as a means to crush and destroy each other.

    Design the war beast!

Keep in mind that this is a very cold world, and the creatures are native to it, so they should display something in their design that keeps them from freezing. Also, you can choose to include a rider with accompanying saddle or harness if you like, but isn't required if you choose to create a creature that isn't ridden, but instead one that's let loose on its enemies.

As a bonus to this round, add some war paint on your creature. The 2 clans hate each other after all, and want to make sure that their enemies know who's unleashing this terror upon them.

Have fun, but remember THIS IS WAR!

    Deadline:

    Wednesday October 20th, 2010. 9:00pm PST (GMT -8 )

    Finals go here: http://="http://www.conceptart.org/f...d.php?t=198693

I like the addition of war paint as a design element! I'll see if I can do a variation in order to display both clans' creatures. Good stuff!

lancer: It may have been vague how I worded it but I meant it to be a requirement for the war paint. I think its a good challenge to add paint that is applied to the base color of the creature.
To answer your other question I think since this is a militarized creature it would be ok to put armor or other adornments onto them. I know it sorta goes against the rules but it seems to fit this topic so it will be allowed.

The word ‘anarchy’ comes from the ancient Greek αναρχία in which αν meant ‘without’ and αρχία meant first a military ‘leader’ and then ‘ruler’. Anarchist society is one ‘without rulers’: a classless, non-hierarchical society.

Monotony - great initial designs. I love the walrus concept. It's something that hadn't even crossed my mind, and it would be cool to see an aquatic arctic war beast.

Jager - Very eerie and atmospheric. Make sure we get the legs in there!

lkjhgfdsa - Haha! Love the war paint! Great scene. Looking forward to more.

m8y - Nice start, really make sure to get a sense of scale in there. The back piece could be almost any size right now.

Parsakoira - Awesome start. There is a real brutality about the strokes you have down. Make sure to get some nice scaling devices in there.

For my design (only sketches in a notebook right now), I'll be incorporating elements from Caribou, Bears and Bison for endurance and spinasaurus fins to cut the winds as they travel through snow-storms. I'm also thinking that snowblindness would be a huge issue for these creatures, so I'm thinking it has developed some kind of transluscent carotene shield over it's eyes to protect them from snowblinding. I hope I can get a sketch up soon. Great stuff all around, guys.

really cool topic. good work this far from our 2 new moderators.
the level of the entries during the last rounds in constantly increasing, some really cool stuff here.

i went for a hairy beast that tramples the enemy hordes like a bulldozer with its massive antler-like jaw. my pose looks a bit like ur first one monotony and after i saw that i was very inspired by the "dorsal horns" of your creature wich seemed to fit perfectly to the jaw that mine has.
will post mine later and if u think it´s too similar just tell me and i´ll remove these elements.

monotony - i like the 1st the most (maybe just because i have a similar creature). all of them need a more dynamic pose i´d say. the 2nd looks like a very fast creature like a hound. i can imagine that these guys are pretty hard to escape. the 3rd doesn´t look as if it can catch me when i run from it

Jager - looks impressive and massive. will you make the body of it more readable? although the atmosphere is great.

lkjhgfdsa - both creature and scene looking great. the face looks a bit flat though yet.
i like how u recycle elements/ideas we saw in your earlier entries (the bound poeple remind me of the cage on your undead dinosaur). i mean that in a very positive way.

m8y - looking good so far, add details and some reference to give us a sense of scale, like Si_Swe said.

Parsakoira - i smell WAARG from LOTR really cool pose. i don´t want to be hunted by that fellow. i am really looking forward to see the next stage of this with details and rendered!

awesome turn out so far guys!

parsakoira: cool start. i really dig the terrain, very descriptive, while still being really loose and fast. the creature is really awesome too, like kir nuyts said it really is reminiscent of battle cat from he man. which makes me wonder if it has some kind of armor, or are those spiky parts part of its anatomy. keep it up!

m8y: cool horns! i also really dig the head shape. i think the problem with scale that people have mentioned already. is that the saddle part looks like its built for a human to sit on, and the structure on it looks like a fort that could hold multiple people in it like the elefants in lord of the rings. i think you're going for latter idea, so i would suggest that you change the saddle part into something more like a series of ropes, belts chains, or smaller things like that. it would help out the scale issue a lot i think.

lkhgfdsa: that's awesome! the war paint is hilarious. the addition of the devastated people is a really great touch. like some people have said the face is a bit flat, but i think thats just a byproduct it still being at this stage of a wip. tons of potential in this one.

jager: wow that's awesome! really fantastic start. nothing to really crit other than the composition feels slightly crowded on the right, and the bottom. maybe expand the canvas a bit.

monotony: yeah dude! i love your quick concepts, i don't know how you bust those out so fast. my favorite is the left, but they're all awesome. can't wait to see where you take these.

here's a quicky sketch i did today, i wanted to do something a little bigger than a horse, that had some traits of a ferret, and a hound. might change it completely though.

m8y! that looks awesome so far!

lkjhgfdsa- nice concept. I like the creepiness of the eyes

Jager- definitely feels cold and the blood dripping is a nice touch

monotony- i love how clean your lines are! what sets them apart as war beasts?

(lark- can't wait to see where that one goes!

goldilockz - Right now that sketch fails the humanoid rule as well as the accessories rule. I realize we're being relaxed on the accessories rule this round because of the nature of the round, but I would ask (lark if weaponry is included in that.

(lark - Try and push some greens into the blues your snow-colours. Right now they are grey-purple-ish blues, there needs to be pretty much the full range of blues from turquoises to indigos to really give snow and ice the depth it needs.
