    Let's get better!

    Hi there!

I'm not very new here, but I've always been looking around, watching other people's stuff. But now I think it's time to put my own sketches on display and try to get better by doing that!

PS: The "NSFW"-prefix is just to be sure, I do some life drawing, which includes nudity of course.

PS2: Sorry if my English isn't always perfect, I'm from Belgium but I think I can manage .

    Anyway, some pictures:

    WIP

    Just some random digital sketches

There you go, my first post.

Will (try to) keep this updated daily!

    grts

    Update #1 - 14 oct. 2010

    @ scottrik03: Thx man!

    Now,

the first one is an environmental sketch. It's for a school assignment where we have to create an environment which we'll put together in UDK (Unreal Development Kit). It was my purpose to catch the atmosphere of a post-apocalyptic, vertical city in which nature and technology live happily together. Need to look more at the larger picture, looks a bit cluttered

Second is a series of thumbnails of the rock/tree shape for the vertical city. Trying to look for a good basic shape here.

The last one came into my mind, looking at the far right thumbnail on the second row from the bottom. It is some sort of ape-like soldier.

That's it for now, will try to upload some good 'ol pencil stuff and life drawing (but that's harder because they're A1 size).

    Cheers!

    Update #2 - 15 oct. 2010

    This is an older one,

A portrait of my girlfriend from ref photo.
    Charcoal on paper, A1 size.

    Took me about 2h.

Overdid the eyes and mouth, but yeah.

    Update #3 - 18 oct. 2010

Damn, last few days have been way too busy!
    And I'm ill aswell .

    Still, here are some sketches.
Some drawings from life and imagination,
and a batch of 30 sec. poses @ posemaniacs.com (selected a couple of pages)

Now I'm off to bed, to get physically better .

PS: Sorry for the sucky quality, pictures taken with the camera on my MB Pro in bad light conditions...

    Update #4 - 20 oct. 2010

    Update number 4!

Decided to get back to basics; pencil & paper!
I think maybe it's better to get my pencil drawing skills at a higher level before I i work digital.

First a sketch from life, drawn with pen.
Next is a portrait from a photo reference, pencil on paper. It is A4 size paper and I've been working on it for about 1h30, still WIP though.

That last pencil sketch is great, i'd say the proportions are spot on and I really like where you are goign with your shading technique, also liking the post apololytic vertical city one, nice use of the colours you would expect from that particular setting and an interesting composition. Good stuff man, looking forward to seeing how you get on!

    Thx Tom!

Been refining the first drawing of this sketchbook. But I still don't know where to go with the small character. First thought of a knight, some sitting guy and now some kind of naked nymph living in the forest?

    C&C very much appreciated!

Ok, friggin finally an update to my sketchbook .

This is a vertical city concept for my game-design class.
First made a drawing on paper with pen, then colored it in Photoshop.

    C&C very much appreciated.

Hello. Here to return the favor.

Your concept art is wicked. Love them! Your digital stuff has clean lines and really creative designs. Your traditional stuff, however, could use a little work. They're good, but there's always room for improvement. And be careful with using photo refs. Sometimes, cameras can't pick up certain hints of light that the eye may be able to see.

    Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the comment guys. Really appreciate it.
And yes, that piece with the dragon is something I should finish, struggling with the colouring :s.

And finally an update again. Mostly work from life drawing class.
Drawings varying from 3min pose studies to 20min drawings (you'll notice which is which I guess)

Hope to do some anatomy study soon, I've got several pdf books on my laptop, time to use 'em.

An update on House, around 2hours of work so far. Making the eyes look alike is extremely difficult! Also, has anyone got any tops on painting the hair? I find it real hard to do...

    Nice stuff here : )

See allot of improvement on your observation on the end here. Really impressive!.

Do you use low opacity when you paint values on photoshop?.

Keep it up the good work!

When I'm going into more detailed work I use brushes between 20 and 60% opacity, but I'm still figuring out what works best for me...

Well I'm going to leave it at this stage, think I am around the 2h45m mark. Not satisfied with the hair but gotta move on.

Also added a page of sketches, studying panda's . Beautiful creatures they are ^^

Ah I see!. I find it better to use a brush that has pressure sensitivity on opacity! That way it will not be so messy in the beginning! And also easier to do rendering But again! I see allot of pro artists out there using that opacity technique you use

Keep on posting stuff dude^^ Work hard !
