ChoW 218 :: The Lady of the Lake

ROUND #218: The lady of the Lake

    DESCRIPTION

    The Lady of the Lake

The Lady of the Lake is a mysterious character in the Arthurian Legends. She goes by many name and many stories. Some tell of her motherly side as she takes care of and raises Sir Lancelot, yet other stories emphasize her independent and powerful personality as she learns mystical magic from Merlin and eventually tricks him. It has also been said she offered Excalibur to King Arthur.

Design the Lady of the Lake!

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lady_of_the_Lake
    http://www.britannia.com/history/biographies/nimue.html

    - Think of her personality: which side are you going to portray? How will you portray it?
    - Beware that this is a character design challenge, not an illustration contest. Of course you are free to paint a beautiful setting, but the main focus should be on the character!

    Good luck!

Maybe I should try this one out....

    ***Edit***

I'm just going to leave it at this sketch. It's not very original; I feel like I've seen this image a hundred times before.

    ***Edit***

Ok I lied I decided to play with it a little bit.

I love the idea of "Lady of the Lake" being a title rather than what she is. Lots of interesting interpretations of this character. I see a powerful woman, who will do what she has to do to get the job done, but also a mother. This will be interesting indeed.

    doodely-doo, whoop-te-woo. ^_^

Edit/ another sketch. She was a bit too "rawr" in the first one, and after all - she is a Lady! Must rework anatomy/perspective/the whole thing. Bleh. Can`t wait to start coloring! :3

Edit/ Good news - started with colors and finally nailed down the final design. Bad news - she`s starting to look like Lady Gaga...o.O

and thanks Gavin.Gray, but not nearly as much as I should though ;P

Ediit - pretty much only detailing left, tweaking some levels etc...basically, the sweet part ^_^

I thought stopping after the subject "underground tribe" …
but I'll be tempted by this latter topic. Lady of the Lake great subject again.

First night's noodling. Went the trapped-Merlin route where they rolled in more Morgan LeFay. I imagined her using Exacalibur to perform blood-magic, a corrupted thing that Merlin wouldn't countenance. Poor guy is trapped in stone back there.
    Anyway.

Here is my wip so far, I would like to make it more dynamic. I threw her arms on there in a bit of a hurry, they seem a bit off.

Lodin: That looks like its going to turn out nice. I love the face.

Done with the sketch. I created a character with the title "lady of the lake" so that the concept could be used as a dynamic character that could be influential in the plot of a story. She is a high priestess and wears ceremonial robes that flow like water. Her circlet represents the arc a fish makes as it jumps out of the water. I'm also going to use a color scheme that reflects water.

Keeping with traditional Arthurian legend, she still gives Excalibur to Arthur.

WIP #2 - lots of cleanup all over the place and color work, and a lot of refinement of the background figure and fixes on the lady.

    Shapoopy.

Did this one yesterday, don't like it but couldn't think of anything better.
I'll see if I can make something better towards the end of the week.

It's a tough topic if you try to stay too realistic with the design.

First sketch... usually I never do this kind of stuff (b&w sketching, and, more importantly, not starting from lines) but well, I want to try something different^^

The Lady of the Lake sitting on a stone in her lake. Water always goes well with a moon, I think

hmm interesting topic. I am probably going to take a pretty non traditional stance on this one. I read a short story by the author of Sabriel (his name escapes me atm) but it was a pretty non traditional stance on the idea. we'll see

I actually love CHOW. I don't think there's ever been a challenge which has managed to beat it in topic ideas and creativity. If school gives me time then I'll take part for sure

Well i've got my sketch done and im ready to move to painting. Time for some comments and critiques.

@Miki Tikus - Looking good. Only advice I can give would be to maybe revisit how her hair is connected with her head, feels like her hair isn't quite connected, but this could change as we see more color.

@rgeorge - Second update looking much better than the first! Much less man faced. Looking forward to seeing more.

@PxelSlayer - Fantastic sketch, defiantly liking the pose and body language in the second one. First one it looked like she was about to strike. Her expression in the second feels a little pained though, not sure if this is intentional or not. On another note, I took a look through your sketch book and you are a true inspiration, I imagine you have put in lots of hard work to get to where you are today and It really shows and pushes me to work harder.

@Art4All - Sketch looks good, I wanna see some color! hehe. Also i hope you're not just copying a character concept from oh my goddess your comment made it seem like that =\.

@tbaldree - Looking great as your does every week I'm coming to find. Only comment I have is that her belly values might be a little wonky, she almost looks pregnant. Love the color in this one btw.

@lodin - Love the action in this one. She looks pretty evil so I assume you're going for that interpretation of the character. Can't wait to see more.

@arteater - Coming along, You might revisit her anatomy, I'm sure it might be painful at this point because it seems you are pretty far along, do you do a sketch before painting or just start with paint? Id look at the value on her right hand, its reading pretty flat, her face proportions need a little work and the most distracting her boobs are wonky! hehe. Keep at it, you're really close!

@FridayEve - Fantastic value sketch. She's looking a little young to me, but that might be what you're going for. Nice folds, this is something I need to work on.

@Reedux - Very interesting interpretation! I worry that some might not get Lady of the Lake out of it because the connection is subtle.

@SunRoamer - Good mood so far, I can see the night scene taking shape. Lets see more! Oh and I think the first one is my favorite.

@Sharppointystick - Hahaha...Haha. This is awesome. Lets see some color.

    Great work everyone!

Gavin: Thanks a lot for the crits, I started that with a real fast sketch and then painted way too fast. I have been working on the proportions and its a big head ache now. And yes her boobies are wonky lol , im fighting them at the moment I love your sketch btw, she looks very proper. I wish I was skilled enough to give you good crits, but I like yours a lot. Everything seems to be flowing together nicely.

Here is an update on my character's head. Changed some things up, like her hair. She looks to have a bit of an under-bite, I kinda like it.

@arteater - Thanks! Just remember it's all about putting in the hard work and learning little bits along the way. I always say practice makes permanence not perfect, a lot of the time we have to have mistakes pointed out to us so we can fix them. that's why CHOW is so great. As for the new head, it's looking better! I think you have a little too much distance between her ear and the rest of her face. Another thing that has helped me is to learn not to commit to things too quickly, for example I some thumbnails to find the pose and silhouette I like, then a sketch, then quick color options, then finally jump into the final painting. This allows me to not get too attached to anything at any point throughout and I'll be able to identify problems with anatomy as I go. Also when you work up values you stay in the middle tones while you find the forms and don't over commit to a dark or highlight.

    @ Arteater;

Good stuff so far, but I think your Lady is missing the back of her skull.. her head is a bit small in that area. Also I think your eye brows might be floating a way from each other a bit.. unless you're in progress on a particular expression? Otherwise I like your approach and the blank eyes.
