Hi Sushy, The photo study you posted last, i'd encourage you to go further in those studies, thats where you skill improve. I feel the structure on that head is not correct for some reason, maybe the eyes, or that pointy chin. The back of her head is bulging out too much back there. SO just keep struggling with those, and you'll get better.

-We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.

-Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon 'em.

@The Jeso: Good point, I often give up on these too quickly I guess. Or I just assume, oh this face is ok, while it is not drawn out well yet xD

OK just a quick update today since I have to go to work tomorrow :|

I finished my sweater now by the way. I have no idea what to knit next. Maybe I will draw more instead now xD

I declare... this one finished for now!

hey... i did a quick overpaint of your wip... kind of messy and Michael Bay would approove of it
i`m afraid (blurry) but... er... my point would be that if you flip the image it kind of puts the
attacking character in a position of entering the scene... at least in the western world :/ ppl read
from left to right and that`s how you can use that to show something/someone incoming/entering.
Also i made small adjustments to the pose - opened the beak a bit (aaaargh!) and tucked his leg in to
emphasize speed of flying. just 1-2 points to think about

@Mattinian: Those are some great tips, I tried them out You are right the impact of the image is better then. The image still needs work but I will get to that later.

Long time no see here @_@
Actually I have not much to say, life has been boring I guess.

You just gave a new meaning to the word of ‘gorgeousness’, cause you aimed
high and you have shot even higher. That’s what you are capable of doing when
you are starting to be unaware of your deeds. Pencil, pen and brush in your hand,
miracle right behind your door, I know that the flexibility of your emotional abilities
are expanding and a pretty blue and violet peaceful butterfly is what you are becoming.
Slowly but surely. Battling through your everyday life wars are creating a new skillset
underneath your armor, you are becoming invulnerable, hard deeds through the icy
shower of storm clouded sky. I have watched your growth over the years, and I got
fascinated by your every move, even if you don’t have much to say now it is
absolutely a big pleasure watching you at your masterful work. Keep the
    heap rolling and climbing higher.

What an awesome sketchbook! I'll follow it as an inspiration and even reference, because the kinds of characters you draw and specially the colours are my end goal.

    Also this is awesome: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/att...5&d=1396811515

n1frit yeeah though I should work harderrr

LtPlissken thanks man, today I have something to write about though, will do that after replying to these. Thanks for the kind words, they always lift me up when I read them. I should read these when I am in a bad mood, I am sure it will cheer me up.

Maquiavelli My sketchbook as inspiration and reference? Woah, that is a great compliment! Thank you so much

It has been a while. Usually there is not much for me to write here, it is just work... school... being tired, trying to improve, failing and then trying again.
Sunday (I think it was Sunday, I am not sure) I discovered something that happened in the US that.. for some reason, made a big impression on me. You can look it up in the news or maybe you have already heard it. It is about a spree killer, he killed several people in Santa Barbara in some kind of school campus. He also wrote a document with his biography, which I read parts of. Maybe I should not have, the misogynistic parts were not so nice. Apart from the misogyny (is that how you spell it?) and racism, there was a lot of loneliness and bulleying (he was bulleyed multiple times through his life, pretty badly too). I have experienced some bulleying in the past too and I think bulleying (and loneliness too) can really break a person. I just find it so sad, that somebody's final cry for help has to be like this. Anyway, it seems sad to me, that is all. If only someone would have talked to him, asked what he was doing. Why he was sitting in his room all day. Why he dropped so much classes. Why he cried a lot etc etc Not going to start a whole discussion about it here.
This is just something that impressed me a lot.

Anyway now it is time to move on to the updates, I have to eat soon.

Now that is a chilling killing spree story, I didn’t heard about it
but it makes me to shiver and chill like I am in a large cold icy bath water.
You performed very nice on these last paintings, keep up with the great work.
Your silver star is shining shinier and shinier, each time I visit.

@LtPlissken: yeah it is a cold story. It has been a week since that, I am slowly forgetting it it seems.
Things fade pretty quickly in my memory.

As it turns darker now I should do this update quickly.
Today was not a very good day, I got a slight conflict with my mother, and painted this from life to forget it:

Ohh lots of improvement in your works!
I really like the works for school on the previous page, specially the one with the girl and the rock statue, Its a very illustrative piece. And the feet and knee Bridgman studies on the top of this page. The studies are very good they show form really nicely. Maybe you can try to push your drawings and paintings to have this 3dimensionality.
    Keep up the good work!

@Voodoo_Mama: thanks, I am glad you like my school work, it is kinda different than my digital work.

    Okay

Why do things get so much more complicated when growing older? I do not get why there was not a single class in school that taught you how to actually start a life. In all aspects

Anyway it has been stressful here again so I decided to just draw a portrait with flowers to relax a bit.

Life can be stressful and hard from time to time, but consider it as a challenge,
cause life is just a travel and not a destination, I know it’s hard but try to let
go of your mental baggage and let yourself go wild with the ride. It’s good
to know that you can work under pressure, you can be creative under hard
circumstances. When you are troubled and find
    yourself in hard times, always ask your self;
what does life and God wants to teach you? There is a lesson in
every pain and suffering, and you can turn it to a positive experience,
which will lead you to a greater state in the future. When the storm
is gone (and it will be gone), you will see a stronger you, standing
proud victorious on top of the hill.

@LtPlissken: Thank you, these words give me more courage. Speaking of Gods teachings, I have been struggling with faith recently too. It is so weird, I always thought my religion would stay the same. But suddenly I started questioning it because of things that happened. I still believe but I am not sure sometimes.

Well that was a long day, it has been very hot here though at work it is always kind of cold.

Beautiful So happy that you're still moving along. Keep on making your art, and it'll fall into place and look amazing, as long as you're open to the learning.

All right, this time I'm gonna be a big ass@ole. You will forgive me, I'm sure, because when we post here is not only for tell us each other "oh that's great" "gorgeous", "keep on". I assume we are here for get better, sooo... I wanna just precise, that this is JUST my opinion, so I can be totaly wrong, but I will explain my reasons.

You are posting here since 2010, but I don't see enouch grow in 4 years. I didn't examine all the sketch book, but every ten page. And the last sketches aren't better than the first one, paintings are a bit better, but they are still mouldy and with a lak of focus and light theory, especially portraits.

I saw a couple of good still (the Hello Kitty wallet one is quiet good). That's mean to me one thing: sure you draw a lot, but you do not exercise enough. Is like you just autodoodle in a style you learned time ago, and still use. This pervasive manga style, in my opinion is useless for you at the moment.

Especially because, when you focus and try something else, you reach results: the first post of this page is a perfect example. That's a study. That's useful. You learn, not only anatomy, but tonal sign, analysis, and understanding of THE WORLD.

Infact there is a lack of REALITY in what you draw, but don't get me wrong, you doodle toonish stuff, no one expect iperealistic or tonal paint, but every draw has to explain things. Every doodle has to talk. Again, I'm not talking about QUALITY, but your attention to subject itself, your empathy with it.

In the Hellokitty still I feel a lot of empathy, and you ability to paste this to the observer, and that's why I choose to write all this. The legs study also show something important: the legs observation (the WORLD observation) bring you to a concentration that you successfull applied to the little portraits around).

I love that page. That's great, because it talks to be about THE WORLD, the REALITY. Art is to take people inside your head, right? But for make that you have to give us HOOKS. And those hooks are rules, and rules are ALL BASED on REALITY. When manga distortion works, that's always because it talk about something real based, something appurtenant to everybody's experience. So, I suggest you use more reference. If automatic doodling relax you, do it, but:

    - if you wanna grow, IMO use reference. Careful, DO NOT COPY, references. Just look at them, stare, understand things, try to remember, than draw. Draw is ALL about understanding thing, that's the only way to create the illusion of a third dimension in the two only we have.
    - exercise on faces. From live could be better than pics. Understand why manga simplify things as they do. They are genius, for do what they do, but they have a total comprension of WORLD, so much they can transalte in different signs. Is another abstraction form.
    - third, looks at good quality paintings. Do not spend time to watch mediocre stuff. Watch at ancient masters, zoomed. Titian, Tintoretto, Velazquez, or Tiepolo' drawings. Manga, comics and toons comes directly from them, no jokes. Look down here.

Well, so, I hope this crits will be useful. Now just rip me apart =)

    Misty Feather Thank you

BlindLynx Oh dear it took some time for me to let that sink in. Woah, not sure how to react to all of this. Funny thing is, on Saturday I had the judgement of my art school and my drawing teacher said critique that reminded me of what you posted. Well, his critique is slightly different, he wants me to study from some Dutch artists (which are masters in my eyes, but not like the old masters, still really great work though).
Yeah there are several problems with my work. Indeed I should study from life more and bring this to my work. The biggest problem is.. me I think. But yeah I just gotta deal with those personal issues. Other problem is that I cannot take critique well or put it into action. After reading this I actually thought of just giving up and quitting. Especially when my drawing teacher left some critique as well. In the context of "Pffh nothing has changed in the last two years" But I simply cannot quit. So yeah I tried to use your critique to improve. For those last two pieces I looked up some reference now. It is hard to find fitting reference, for now I just looked up faces that are in a similar position.
anyway, thanks for taking the time to respond, and for writing the truth. This critique hits me hard, but I think it is fair critique.

okay now to post things... eeeuh

What a lovely girl =) I'm sorry I smack you so hard... I really didn't mean to hurt you. I was checking out often the notifications, awaiting for yours, and when I didn't saw it coming I just realized I was too rough and that you could have been so hurted to quit. But I knew that 42 pages of sketchbooks means a huge passion and focus, and in art we all have to swallow crits all the time (fallow crits, artist, crits, crowd crits, and critics crits =D). basicaly today arts is about critics. So you were needed to be strong to my crits and show what you can do better. Follow what your teacher said and always push things to the limit. And remember to OBSERVE, and to explain to your brain what your eyes see. Often we just draw what we THINK to see, and we false things. The fox isn't bad, there is some sweat in it =) My advice: look at great people improvement here. NOt for compare how much they grown from draft to pro in 1 year, but for understand what the steps are, and what kind of exercise they did for reach goals. Write to them, ask for link, tutorial and sites. I suggest to talk with three gentlemen here: Pindurski, Kingkostas and Z01ks. They are superimproved artist, and I'm following them for learn. And let me specify that my crit was NOT about YOU. There is nothing wrong with you. You are not your work. Never. So don't say that the problem in your work is you. The problem is just a lack of tecnic (something we can learn). But you have passion and will to do better, and that's enough. As Wolvie say: your best is enough. Just be sure to spread it. A big hug, thanks for your gentle forgive and good work!

Well, in order to improve, the best thing we can do is to realize that people love the potential in us when they give us critiques.

It's out of caring and bravery that someone will tell you the truth about how to make your work the best it can be, and I think BlindLynx did that.

I'm guessing there's been a lot going on in your life that has gotten in the way, though, and no matter what... Every piece you ever make will send you higher on that endless celestial staircase of artistic improvement. And all you can do is keep drawing. And aim high. You know?

You have the values, and you have the forms... There's so much potential there. But, you have to study more, that's all. I think it's great that you're doing so much from imagination, which is what a lot of artists fail to do. They spend too much time on studies. But, in your case, it's a good idea to start bringing in more studies, I think. Study apples, study people, draw what you see. That's the way to become amazing-- And we all know you're almost there! You just gotta slam past the plateau you're at.

Keep up the great work and effort!

Hey Sushy! Don't ever quit, you've had this sketchbook since 2010, and it's clear and obvious to everyone that you're very passionate about art. You love this, and that's something I can see through your pictures. Being passionate about something means that there's a lot of potential. The seed has been planted, if that makes sense.

Critique can hit us very hard at times, I know, but it's important to remember what Misty feather said, people are never giving constructive criticism with the motive of being mean or rude.

You are making many traditional studies from Bridgman and others, and those look great. So you are studying, and you are painting a lot from your imagination. That's something I admire, because I paint too little from imagination. All you have to do basically is to apply what you've studied to your personal work. That's the hard and scary part we all have to face. That's outside of our comfort zone.

You're working hard, you're very passionate about this and you will get better, there's no question about it. Don't ever think that this is something that you can't do, because you can! The seed was planted a long time ago, now you have to make it grow in to a great artsy flower!

Hey Sus, just follow thru and saw your last post.
Instead of drop it all think you doing well, it's the part of artists path- to accept self style and self way of drawing and vision. I had the same filling, nothing changed more that 5 years, i'm still painting garbage and can't make any eye-candy picture, but i found pleasure in process and my ability to draw abstract things to order. Indeed you are not so well in realism but you are absolutely great in kids illustrations and making emotions. Don't brake express your self, keep it up, find your strong sides!

Hey Sushy! been a while since I commented here .

On the topic of studying & improving, I think you need to be applying the studies you do more, well you did a photostudy of a fox but you can't really apply it to anything here.
A better one might of been to study someone holding a lantern maybe, so you can get some ideas for the shape of the lantern and study how the light effects certain objects like the thorns, and then do a fox study when you want to draw a fox like creature or something with similair fur. I think these sorta studies are better suited for when you know what you want to learn from them and then to apply it to something you're working on.
I'm doing this alot with my own work atm, I don't draw from imagination enough so I generally started seperating my ideas into projects and then apply my studies to them, for example i'm working on this siren creature on a beach piece and I studied composition to create thumbnails for it, I picked one out and then started studying anatomy, trees and the other aspects I wanted in the image and then applied it all to the lineart, and now i'm trying to do value studies of beaches to get an idea for how to paint it in value, the piece is taking a while but i'm learning alot from it.

I also think maybe you should study realism especially anatomy more, even if the style you want is'nt realistic you still need to know as much about realism as you can so as to morph it to youre style, even someone like Picasso apparently knew how to paint realism and thats why he could make the art that he did because he knew how to intelligently deform them, all art is an interpretation of life no matter how abstract and that's why I think it's best to learn realism and figure out how to apply it to youre style.
So maybe try studying realism and realistic artists and applying that to realistic work, then study manga or anime artists to figure out how they deformed them to theyre styles.

I can't speak much on the topic of how to deform realism to anime as i'm mostly focused on realism atm but maybe look at the sketchbooks of doolio or eduardo guaray on crimson daggers, they're by no means masters at all but I think they have a pretty good idea on how to apply realism to anime without losing it's style.

And lastly Don't quit, Don't even think about quitting, Don't even think about not quitting 42 pages in a sketchbook in 4 years is pretty damn big and shows you definetly have the passion for art, i've been around for half that amount of time and I don't even have half as many pages in both my sketchbooks(although I intend to change that ;P), you have the commitment to it clearly, I just think you need to figure out how to strategise on how to improve.

Wow thanks for all your posts, it really means a lot to me. I have been terribly unmotivated for the last two months but these posts give me courage to continue again. I also have some personal issues going on and these made everything I try to do look pointless. But thanks to your posts I feel motivated again. I haven't felt this motivated since a long time.

BlindLynx Now don't get too soft haha. I guess I took the critique too personal then. I am a bit oversensitive, especially when I am stressed. I find it nice to hear you actually was wondering about my response. xD Yeah I gotta grow some thicker skin I guess. ^^; I mean crits are indeed a way to get better. I will check out those sketchbooks

Misty Feather Yeah some things in my life have gotten in the way indeed. I almost cried the first time I read this comment, guess I am a little too emotional xD
I will slam the bloody plateau that's in the way huuuaargh xD

n1frit thank you Dimiiii :> glad to know I am not the only one who feels like this sometimes..

triggerpigking Yeah I should fix my planning, I planned on painting a fox, so I did this study. But now I got a different idea and will paint that XD
    I won't quit, I promise!

okay typing all that took more time than I thought.. gotta put out these updates quickly since I have to go soon 0w0

And I started this one since I got this idea for a new sea monster. Photoshop crashed during the process so I had to recover it from the icon thumbnail. >___> That's why it looks a bit fuzzy.

*sigh* This month does not seem to be going well. First I had problems with my family and then at my work they told me that I will be unemployed in three months. I dislike the job I have there, but this uncertainty is very scary as well. =_= And I have not slept properly for a while now, so tired and I forget things all the freaking time.

Anyway, here are my updates. Looking at this sketchbook I remembered that I still need to finish that Gundam 00 couple fan art. 0///0

Hey Sushi! Awesome to hear that you've got your courage to draw and paint back, but i'm very sad to hear about your job and family situation. Hope things sorts out!!!

Great photostudy, good vibrant colors. Something that I have noticed in your pictures from imagination is that you tend to shade stuff like there's no light coming from behind, if that makes sense. In the end it kind of takes away the sense of form and depth and I can see it as well in the dragon picture. I tried to make a super quick paint over to demonstrate what I mean. (Disclaimer: I do not claim to be a master around form, but I think I made a point nevertheless)

Hope i didn't ruin the picture, i still tried to stay true to your style! Hope it helps, and good luck! Keep your head up, stay motivated and paint! You're doing great!
