Egg and Chips and Spam and Spam Spam Spam..

I'm sure everyone here has noted the presence of spammers on both this site and the wider landscape of forums. Thankfully this site is well-policed and moderated and as a result it is very rare any spam/spammer has more than an hour or so to live. Let us be thankful.

But when we examine this issue more closely, one has to wonder what drives these spambots to be directed/attracted to this site. I might understand their presence were we a conglomeration of middle-aged average joes discussing things round the digital water cooler, but on an art website? It's not as if they aren't aware of the nature of this site. I have been witness to numerous spammers making such delightfully phrased comments as

"The Images you have draw is really an brilliant one and i really likes out yours creativity and definitely great use of the photoshop just keep good work and shares out more images in the forum..."

The spammer in question was advertising electrolysis treatments. Electrolysis? REALLY? How many of us here, on an ART website, are rabidly seeking cheap internet electrolysis? These spambots are evidently being directed here by a conscious force - they are not naturally occurring phenomena, and one has to wonder whether the being that sent them here knew ANYTHING about not only the nature of the posters here but of the general attitude to spambots web-wide.

So what are your thoughts? Any notable spammers to share?

Dude, last I checked, these things are programmed to pretty much trawl the web blindly looking for "places-to-post-stuff"... hence why they're such a problem on personal blogs and such-like. I doubt anyone consciously "directed" them here specifically.

I suspect the ones with seemingly art-related blather are pulling random content from other posts and/or cobbling together key words and phrases at random.

Like the entities in Mothman, their motivations are not human. In fact, they're not human, they're bots.

In the beginning, the Goddess created idiots.

    The idiots then created SpamBots.

In reaction, the Goddess then created the hammer. Amen.

Here let's make it easy for you.

Bots like to go to places that are cached/searchable in search engines and have high volume.

Distressingly, some of the "bots" must be actual people (worst job ever?). Frequently, we'll get a new account that posts empty but relevant replies for a few days to build up a decent post count. Then, after flying under the radar, they edit their signature and fill it up with spam links. These are easy for us to miss, since by the time the posts become spam they're not new any more. So, if you spot any of these, please report them.

    Will do Elwell.

My mate worked for the Daily Mail because she had to pay the rent, it went against everything she stands for. One of her jobs was researching new methods of spamming and sorting out those 'competitions' you get online where after you've filled out the form so you can win your tickets to Paris or whatever they sell your details to the highest bidders so they can spam you with 'relevant' offers! Evil...just evil!

The only good thing to come out of that is that she stopped them from developing a car insurance website for men called "Women can't drive" (as a response to the women only policies) she got them with the name as it's a fact that women statistically drive better than men! haha Anyway she works for a charity now and she's happy. But the Daily Mail is still evil.

Could your friend shed any light on the thought processes of these vile individuals? Surely they must be at least vaguely aware of the hatred spam/spambots incite? I know I would never buy from a company I knew used spambots. Surely you would lose more customers than anything else.

Amazing that people like this exist, building up a post count just to post spam.

and there is the problem exactly. If they weren't making money at it they would stop (well most, some idiots are even dumber than that). They keep going because people buy stuff off them. If we could find those people and ________ (edited for violence) them we could fix the spamming issue.

These are probably those "Work at home/data entry" jobs. I've seen the descripts how they're just supposed to post links and that's probably what they're doing.

Yes, and please do not reply and quote them, as they get cached in search engines, defeating the purpose of deleting their posts.

And then the other spiders come in their chittering hordes to clamber up and down the code searching for tasty links.
