Hi! After 2 years of lurking I finally decided to start a sketchbook, because I feel I need my ass kicked to improve. I'm self-taught and I paint for fun. I use open-source software: GIMP, MyPaint, Inkscape and Alchemy.
Here are my works, from oldest (made 2 years ago) to newest: mostly speedpaintings, some characters I made for a friend, Mass Effect fanart and studies from life.[

A one made yesterday, done in MyPaint and edited with GIMP
And some gestures from Spartans Camp + skin study. I used posemaniacs and character design as a ref for poses and a photo ref for skin (unfortunately I've lost a link for this one).
Ooh I recognise this!
The spartan camp! Thank you for visiting my sb.
You have a nice start, so far I see you have tackled envos, figures, stills n portraits.
I think what you should really work on more are those values. Get a good range of those,
and get better with tone, tint and shadow. Sometimes you neglect that.
this and particularly this helped open my eyes.
See you at the camp.
Hey BlackDelphin, thanks for critique and great links. Yes, my colors are flat, maybe because I used to start with a b&w picture and added colours later on a separate layer set on overlay/multiply. Now I try to start with a colour and get it right, but still everything is to gray and totally uninteresting. I have to do more studies from life instead of imagination, just like this one (I'm not happy with the result though).
Thanks wasabi. "Draw, draw, draw" I will. Made this one today, it's my dendrobium, it has a very wierd shape. Still not happy with the outcome.
Some studies for spartans and generic boobage, that may be finished one day (still, I have no idea what to do with background).

I think overall more refed drawing will help. I have tried the b&w method a couple of times,
yet I am not so fond of, but I do take a layer adjustment layer, desat the whole thing, and whenever I want,
I can switch it on and see how my values are doing. From what I heard though, it's all in how you use those settings,
choosing one light colour, another base, another shadow, etc.
In any case, keep these studies coming!
Last idea looks awesome! Take your time with that one.
Thanks Cristina, I think I'll ditch b&w method for a while (I don't use PS, GIMP doesn't have "layer adjustment" function yet). I'll observe a lot and ref more!
Boobs update, don't have any idea what to do with it next. Plus a pic I'll try to work more on and poses for spartan camp.
great updates bombur, keep at it ur doing great plus the gestures are looking good to, keep up the goodness!
More gestures and update of landscape pic. How can I make rocks more rocky?
Some faces refed and from imagination + progress on last pic.
Figures for spartans (refed from character design) and fan art of a character form Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen - Sorry.
Thanks cgaddict. So, I made some value studies (refed from fashion magazine). Am I doing it right?
Spartans again, this time video referenced and some Malazan Book of the Fallen fanart.
Update from this week, a COW entry, lame thumbs of enviros from imagination and some of sketches for spartans.
Studies from pics, each made in 10-15 min. I wanted to capture pallette and general feel rather than focus on details.
Barbarian from imagination and 2 value studies from photo reference.
Just a random fantasy female from imagination. I wanted it to look fine, but now I see that her arm looks awkward and her proportions are just awful. And she looks too much like Malin Akerman in Watchmen.
Some poop made in last few days. Clothes study from fashion magazine and very crappy illustration. More practice and critique needed.
Thanks for the feedback Moriah!
Some update: joint studies for spartans and my first ChOW entry.
Had some fun with alchemy today, couple fo quickies and decided to explore one of them.
2 Sargent studies. I tried to keep myself within 1 hour limit, looking for a way to make my colours less flat and gray.
Failed value studies.
First in 2011. After a long break. I can't force myself to complete these.
Finished ones: eow entry and another malazan fanart.
