Brambor's sketchbook : your critique is needed here!

Hi! After 2 years of lurking I finally decided to start a sketchbook, because I feel I need my ass kicked to improve. I'm self-taught and I paint for fun. I use open-source software: GIMP, MyPaint, Inkscape and Alchemy.
Here are my works, from oldest (made 2 years ago) to newest: mostly speedpaintings, some characters I made for a friend, Mass Effect fanart and studies from life.[

And some gestures from Spartans Camp + skin study. I used posemaniacs and character design as a ref for poses and a photo ref for skin (unfortunately I've lost a link for this one).

    Ooh I recognise this!
The spartan camp! Thank you for visiting my sb.

You have a nice start, so far I see you have tackled envos, figures, stills n portraits.
I think what you should really work on more are those values. Get a good range of those,
and get better with tone, tint and shadow. Sometimes you neglect that.
this and particularly this helped open my eyes.

    See you at the camp.

Hey BlackDelphin, thanks for critique and great links. Yes, my colors are flat, maybe because I used to start with a b&w picture and added colours later on a separate layer set on overlay/multiply. Now I try to start with a colour and get it right, but still everything is to gray and totally uninteresting. I have to do more studies from life instead of imagination, just like this one (I'm not happy with the result though).

    Looking good in here !
Seems you have a good notion of colors and line
You know the basics, keep it up with those studies of anatomy, a bit of value and proportions and you will keep improving !

    draw draw draw
    cheers !

Thanks wasabi. "Draw, draw, draw" I will. Made this one today, it's my dendrobium, it has a very wierd shape. Still not happy with the outcome.

Some studies for spartans and generic boobage, that may be finished one day (still, I have no idea what to do with background).

I think overall more refed drawing will help. I have tried the b&w method a couple of times,
yet I am not so fond of, but I do take a layer adjustment layer, desat the whole thing, and whenever I want,
I can switch it on and see how my values are doing. From what I heard though, it's all in how you use those settings,
choosing one light colour, another base, another shadow, etc.

In any case, keep these studies coming!
Last idea looks awesome! Take your time with that one.

Thanks Cristina, I think I'll ditch b&w method for a while (I don't use PS, GIMP doesn't have "layer adjustment" function yet). I'll observe a lot and ref more!

Boobs update, don't have any idea what to do with it next. Plus a pic I'll try to work more on and poses for spartan camp.
