Is using your awesome art as wallpapers ok with you?

Self explanatory. Just so I know how you all feel about my habit of going through sketchbooks or finished works, going OH WOW MUST HAVE THAT and adding it to my slide-show of concept art for my wallpaper. Occasionally a friend (we all study together) will also say OH WOW GIVE ME A COPY and we'll share your awesome around. I do this for inspiration, but also because some stuff here is too good to miss.

Oh, and on this note, we want to plaster our lab/studio/classroom's (call it what you wish) walls with something other than just video game posters, so would you like me to PM you before I print off a largish (A3) copy of your art? If you have a problem with me printing your work, let me know.

As long my name was on it, sure.

But for prints, I'd expect compensation.

I'm also interested to know the feelings of the many pro's out lurking out there, what do you (yes, you!) feel constitutes fair use (separate from the law).

Personally, I see no harm in setting an admired artists work as your wallpaper, or printing it out in low res and putting it on your bedroom wall (or roof)... assuming the artist is not already making it available as a print. (If you were really a fan of the work, you would squeal at the chance for a high-res print).

As for putting it on a classroom wall, i guess it gets a little fuzzy (both morally and legally). On one hand, it's for education, but on the other, not all colleges are non-profit organizations.

But I'm definitely no pro. How do you guys view it?

I doubt anyone has done that with my art yet, but I wouldn't mind if it's just for their own personal comps. I'd like to know just because it inspires me to work harder and it makes me giddy like a schoolgirl

No. I don't see why you'd want to put valuable paintings on your walls. Buy regular wallpaper and hang the art on the wall afterwards like normal people. Jeez, kids these days...

I don't post anything at high enough res to worry about it, which is what I suggest to others if they are worried.

Not that I suspect that it happens to me much, but I have no problem with people using my work as wallpaper or printing out a low-res copy (if I post high-res pics on the web, shame on me.) Our student group did that with Penny Arcade comics (wallpapered the office with them) and PA made a ton of money off us buying their t-shirts and books. People who make their money primarily on prints may not feel the same.

I do have a problem with people claiming the work as theirs or making money off it.

Anyone who is upset that some kid out there is using their art as a wallpaper... needs to loosen up, to say the least.

Seriously though... I wouldn't mind. If someone wants to appreciate my art, let them I'd say. Noone pays for a wallpaper anyway.

    Only if I get royalties!

Hahaha... No, I'm joking. Of course anyone can use my art as wall paper if they want.

Physically, too, if you're only posting low res stuff. As dpaint says, if you only post images of a few hundred pixels then it's unlikely people will be able to rip you off in any meaningful way. AFAIC anybody who wants to use my stuff as wallpaper or stick on their social networking pages or whatever then that's fine, as long as they don't credit anybody else with the images, or fuck about with them. And if they credit me and link back then even better.

JUST TO CLARIFY- If I was to print your stuff, it would only be a single copy for our class wall, and I'd leave your name or watermark intact

I demand that you print at least a dozen copies or none at all. What I am, some second rate schmuck deserving only of a single print?

I was joking. I doubt anybody will mind you printing their art and sticking it on your classroom wall. Unless its, you know, porn or something.

Awwwww....what's wrong with some porn on the school walls? Don't you believe in a well-rounded edumacation?

Unless it's furry porn in which case, I think we have enough for this generation.

Also, this might be a stupid question but when people speak of putting low-res artworks on the net so it won't be stolen, is it the resolution when you try to save a finished work? If yes, what's the usual resolution people use?
