Need to get back to doing studies again.
    Tonight it's Frodo. 2 hours.

I tried something different today - just a quick outline sketch for basic proportion and then I went right to color blocking. I didn't let myself use any soft brushes - only one hard brush.

I also stayed at 100% zoom and did as much detail as I could at that level before allowing myself to zoom in. I painted over the lines first thing and tried to look at negative space and color blocks instead of outlines.

I'm kind of happy with how it turned out. I think my favorite photo study so far.

    Catish - thank you!

in2eternity - thanks again for dropping by

Getting started tonight on this week's CHOW - I'm jazzed about the way this is heading. This will be fun to finish up - going to try to take it to a really nice polish this week if I can.

I think this is the first real Sci-Fi stuff I've done, and I managed to get mechanical/proportion stuff taken care of reasonably satisfactorily up front, which will hopefully make this just fun to jam on values and color and finish.

nice handbag! i joke, thats killer. its nice to see a mechsuit with a rollbar headguard; it always looks super easy to fall over or try and scratch your cheek and end up mashing your head off..

The Star Wars poster is awesome and you got a cute Jedi! Could you mention a good book for drawing kid's face (anatomy, landmarks, shading, proportions, measuring)?

Velocity Kendall - Thanks! Yeah, that man purse comes in handy

surus - Thank you! Hmm. For portraiture I've just been practicing with a picture on my desktop - mostly I try NOT to grid or do anything like that and force myself to train my eyes.

So, I think I'm about wrapped up for CHOW -
but I can't decide which way to go for my submission.
Any thoughts or last minute critiques?

Quick scribble. Trying to force myself to use different colors. Thought I would redo the lady-orc from page 1 and see how it ended up. Made sure not to look at the old one for any details at all. No ref, from mind.

I kind of like it - I think I may finish it up.

I have no idea why she is standing in front of a peach sky with swirly white cloud thingies, but I'ma go with it.

maybe you were thinking contrasts look awesome!?

haha but really everything's looking great, you're really improving with thsese most recent studies, BUT i would love to see more pencils, or any form of traditional stuff, don't go too digital on us

    cheers

Dope Fiend - thanks sir! Yeah, I've never been much of a traditional sketcher. I end up with a grubby, over-erased mess most of the time, or a hand cramp. But I ought to spend more time at it - I find digital an easier way to experiment and quickly try things out, and I need a lot of practice with color in general - I've noticed more overall improvement when I'm doing studies in digital.

Total turnabout for my CHOW. Last one looked waaaay too much like some existing 40k art that I must be parroting - I was going for a pretty 40k vibe, but ended up regurgitating stuff. We'll try this direction instead.

Some really cool stuff in here man. I particularly dig the little evolved rodent concept - good stuff.

dang dude! pretty stoked about your revised postman. in fact, i'm glad you redid the design~ i too got the feeling of the warhammer / starcraft vibe. although it is cool, this new rendition seems to be more fitting definitely getting my vote ^^"

teapo - thanks a ton - I really appreciate it. I think I like the rework better too. Feels more appropriate, and a lot less derivative.

Tonight's CHOW WIP! Going pretty fast. Focusing on trying a different base brush, and trying to keep my colors from going too saturated.

Dude, I'm a huge fan. I love your work, and I really appreciate that you've been posting the animated gifs of the progression. It's nice to see it all in one little space, as opposed to spreading it out across a page or two.

Your Star Wars stuff is awesome, and inspired me to work my kids into my art more.

Cozmo - thanks a lot sir Kids are fun to paint! They get into posing.

    Teundeboer - thanks!

    Fallenangel - Many thanks

mEgA fLeeCe RaIn - Thank you!

    dleoblack - Thanks!

Really having a blast on CHOW this week - things are going more smoothly than normal, I'm finding myself able to fix problems as I see 'em and am happy with the way the colors are developing. I fixed a bunch of anatomy and stance issues today and pushed the mood closer to what I want. Still lots to do - but lots of time left too! Going to put a few more hours in tonight.

Here's where I'm signing off on this for the night. Lots of detail rendering, reworked shin armor, starting to detail shield, worked over exposed flesh and chestpiece and a bit on the beard and mask. Trying a little bit of canvas texture in here too to start working in as I go.

very nice works, just wanted to dropp by and say that i gave you my vote for the intergaltic postman, i think yours worked really well with the topic and the design of it is just awsome, i agree about the warhammer look on the 1st idea, i think the last wip is turning out really nice, colours are fitting very well with his pose and it kinda have a traditional feel to it, i just love it
