    in2eternity - Thanks again

Whoo! Made it to page 4.

Today I started working on a movie poster for my kid. I wanted to do it in the style of the awesome movie posters that Drew Struzan has done. About two hours in and am just about to start working on real value and color and tidying up the initial sketch.

Finished! I think about 5 hours total. I've included the snaps I took of my kiddo in reference clothes. It's HARD to pose a 5 year old!

The last movie poster was such a blast to do, and my 5 year old is such a Star Wars fan, the next project had to be a Star Wars poster. Kids these days only get crappy clone wars garbage - I think she needs a little extra dose of the classic stuff! This should be really fun to finish up.

Dressed her up in some of mom's clothes to approximate a robe, dug out the plastic lightsaber, and had her flail around with it while I took pictures. She had a great time.

Doing all these freehand studies has been really helpful - I can feel myself getting more competent at laying down lines where I want them to go and keeping proportion in check.

Here's my first real composition mockup. Any thoughts before I start really digging in?

You've really stepped it up with your last kid pirate illustration. Nice one! The Star Wars one is looking pretty good. Try to do several composition studies before commiting though. Give yourself some choices. Check out Mike Butkus's stuff and definitely Drew Struzan's work to get a feel of how some masters composed movie posters. Great stuff, on the latest posts.

Beelow - I've been looking at tons of Struzan but hadn't seen any of Mike's stuff yet - thanks for the tip! I jiggered around and tried a few more compositions ( I'd done about 3 before the first post even ) and came up with something I like a bit better. Thanks again.

Fetsch - Thanks a ton! I just checked out your sketchbook for the first time - really great stuff you have going on. Your value work is great.

Here's updated progress from this evening - layout alterations, a first pass at cleaned up linework and a rough value setup. I've pulled together some of the pyramid a bit more overtly.

Would love to get any thoughts and crits at this stage before I start committing to color. This one is taking quite a bit longer than the last one - lots of moving parts.

Got the bulk of the two most complicated renders in place tonight - more detail work to be done on them, but tomorrow I'll tackle the first pass renders on the rest of the composition and then circle back around.

WOW, fabolous work man! Would it perhaps be possible to make the animations slower? Just to make it easier for me to study ; )

    Dana_T - Thanks!

Divorahk - You bet - was fun to do

    Cameli - Thanks a lot - I appreciate it.

    zou - Muchas Gracias

chuck18mp - Thanks - I'll make sure to do a process anim for this as well when completed

InsanityVonMike - Yep, I'll do the anims slower next time. You can also open them up in imageready if you have it to view the frames individually.

    snatti - Thanks!

Here's a progress update - still not done - lots of finer rendering and cleanup left to do, and the death star and x-wing, which I am dreading painting.

    Finished. Woot!

Including a slower animation this time as requested. Probably 10 hours all told of work, I think the most time I've spent on anything thus far.

    Zou - thanks!

Just a couple of quick scribble portraits ( maybe 10-15 minutes each ) to try out a few thoughts for the upcoming CHOW before I start playing around with figure and composition. I'm trying to decide whether to lean male or female on this one.

Excellent Star Wars poster. You're improvement is way more epic than mines. Keep it up. You've got some other nice sketches that you've worked on I see.

As far as the chow entry, I think you probably should do a way with the backlight sun. Either, that or just adjust the value placement of where the lights are hitting the character. It would be more of a rim light, that off to the side as such. You could define form with cool colors hitting him from a bottom flood light source of the sort. I think it would be way more effective that way. My thoughts on that one. Keep it up though, you are doing great work.
