Dragan Bibin - Serbian Mythology and Folktales - UPDATE (Jun 30th, 2012)

An afterimage or ghost image is an optical illusion that refers to an image continuing to appear in one's vision after the exposure to the original image has ceased. Negative afterimages are caused when the eye's photoreceptors, primarily those known as cone cells, adapt from the overstimulation and lose sensitivity.

Dragan Bibin - Serbian Mythology and Folktales - UPDATE (Jun 30th, 2012)

OMAJA/APPARITION - Omaja is rarely seen demon, it has the ability to alter its physical appearance, and often represent itself as vulnerable girl.
Concentrate on the blood stain in the middle of the picture, on the handkerchief, for about 20 seconds. Take a look at a wall near you. Than start blinking your eyes and you will see a true Apparition emerging.

I started by digitally drawing a white face on a black background the way I wanted it to appear, and then made a negative image of it. Later I painted rest of the painting while trying to match black and white surfaces with something on the girls body (hair, flower, handkerchief...). In this process black silhouette changed a little. Here you can see the difference...

Neke od ovih slika me podjsećaju na "leptiricuu" koju sam gledao kao dijete samo jednom, a još se sjećam, brrrrrr

Omaja is FREAKISHLY scary. I watch a lot of horror movies and have seen some horrific things there. But this scared the hell out of me. To see that face in my desk.... chills went down my spine. I love the darkness of the night, and at times despise daylight. But if I watch this enough... well suffise to say I wont be looking for that illusion too often.

Cuma worked best in the second version. But I liked the content in the first. Maybe if the figures and the overall contrast of the surroundings had been less it might have worked just as well there.

Anyway, this is truely beautiful and masterfully done. True poetry. Can I ask; the egg tempera you use, did you make that yourself?

I was directed to your work after reading the post on Gurney Journey about your method of making maquettes. I was immediately struck and inspired by your work, in particular Omaja and am glad to have found you here on CA. Amazing. Keep it up.

    Mateja - Hvala puno!

Miljenko - Hvala na poredjenju, bas mi je drago sto si povezao moje ilustracije sa "Leptiricom", taj film mi je bas velika inspiracija.

Geir - Thank you! It is really great compliment for me.
I make my own egg tempera paints (grinding pigments and mixing with egg yolk). I also prepare traditional chalk and rabbit skin glue gesso on plywood. The whole process is as traditional as can be.

Max Martelli - Thank you for the feedback and support!

Cool. I make my own paint myself too. I make oil tempera. I want to try ordinary tempera one time also , I just havent gotten around to it yet. I did use to make my own gesso aswell, but now I just use an acrylic based "gesso" (they call it gesso at least

    Amazing stuff as always.
Really love the reds and blues in the tones all around. Tiny marks that make all the difference.
Did you actually paint digitally or just used CS just for colour and other adjustments?

    cheers,
    D

Hats off to your work. I am loving all of your work and your pieces are the real dark poetry.
My favs are Omaja (darn scary and true to its subject), big eared dragon, Vampires and witches (I have a feeling that dog will bark and turn its face to me), False bookmark, House guarding snake and ofcourse the mood set in Ala.
The maturity in your work is really unique and impressive, please keep updating.

Darjane, this painting is painted mostly in oils, with some of the colors and accents done digitally.
