2 must see movies on the Baroque painter Caravaggio

The Baroque painter Caravaggio was not only a seminal figure in the development of chiaroscuro, he also was one of the most fascinating biographical figures of all art history, having spent much of his life either in prison or in the company of prostitutes.

2 excellent movies have been made on the man.

The first is Caravaggio (1986), directed by the notable gay director Jarman. This is an idiosyncratic, personal, yet ultimately very beautiful depiction of the artist and is something of a cult film with strong emphasis on the artist's bisexuality. I think the whole movie's somewhere on youtube.

The other Caravaggio (2007) is a more conventional, yet lushly detailed 4 hour epic of the artist, filmed in Italian. I highly recommend this if you can find it. Here's a trailer:

You should also proabbly check out Simon Scharma's Power of Art - Caravaggio, it's an episode from a great series on painters' lives, and is on youtube also!

The 1986 one is boring, and is more of a story of its own, than with any relation to the painter. It could have stood as just a love-triangle story in which one of the characters is a famous painter. I think anyone interested in actually knowing about Caravaggio, and not a fictional(?) story involving his name, should look elsewhere

OK, thanks for pointing that out! Scharma is a pretty incredible historian, (though I hate his voice).

What Zwarrior says about the 1986 version is true - it's an artsy movie, it's slow, and it's not a historically faithful depiction of his life. Some will find it strange, but that's just Jarman's (the director's) idiosyncratic, poetic way of story telling. You either dig that sort of thing, or you don't. I did not find it boring, personally.

When I was studying Italian, I learned a bit about Caravaggio. I don't know why, but Young Sick Bacchus both intrigued me and creeped me out a bit...
