    I'll keep moving.

I am 22, I work in photoshop CS3 mostly (sometimes iscribble, odosketch, tegaki, other such online drawing tools) with an intuos tablet. I have taken a few art classes but am mostly self taught.
I am growing to accept that not knowing how to do things is simply a sign of inexperience, and not a sign that I should quit, and to be comfortable with making mistakes in order to learn. I want to hear what I can do to improve, please.
Thank you very much in advance for looking at my sketchbook.

    Thank you very much.

I am trying to use concept art's uploader for this quick fanart. I am not clear on whether or not it is acceptable to use photobucket/outside links.

I think you have some nice rendering skills and it seems like you really enjoy drawing animals. I think the dragon in post #12 is looking particularly good. I think you can work on drawing people some more. Other than that, I'm not really sure what to say. I'm curious to see more.

do you still feel that you're at a stand-still, as per the admittedly month-or-so old thread title?

try another medium or style -- one you like, one you can't stand, however you wanna crumble it. Most everything I'm seeing in here (save some exceptions, incidentally a style that would be cool to see more of) is in the same, blended, painterly style -- try something harsher maybe, with more emphasis on composition and design? seems like it would be a good foil to what you're doing now. alternatively, something even softer! just different.

as far as mediums go, if you have any sketches or beyond on paper/canvas/etc, that'd be great to scan and see. if not, scratch up some, if you've got the materials? it's a different angle to work from, very often an enlightening one

also not seeing very many studies recently (again, with exceptions); it can also be refreshing to get back to basics and pin down exactly where your progress is gumming up.

in short, and possibly better advice overall, leave comfort zone!

i like your last sketch color-choice and constructionwise, even if it could be stronger, but I'm not entirely sure what's going on -- is it reffed? going for a slightly surreal look? the legs in particular look a little oversimplified and lightweight.

Thank you so much, mfb. I'm sorry for the late reply, I was getting frustrated and took some time to myself without sharing my work. I really appreciate your advice and will try to take it. To be honest I am enjoying myself in what I am doing, which is why it is hard to leave the comfort zone. But I am trying to draw from life more and more often.
The last image of the fox isn't drawn from reference, rather I looked through many photos and pieced together the idea in my head (hence anatomy issues).

I want to experiment more. Your suggestions really mean a lot, it is so helpful just to get some ideas of what to do now.

Oh and ps- that skull wasn't actually referenced... I drew one from reference recently before, but that one wasn't.

Posting some stuff from the last few days.

    PPS (some sketches)-

We've all been there. I'm trying to find a process that'll work for me, again, I slip out of the art loop every once in a while. And IDC about the slow reply, as I only now managed to find this under my pile of bookmarks anyway (way to be crass, me).

Apparently it was good enough to fool me so you got somethin' right, hey-

I really like this one even if I sense it's a polished sketch. If you wanna mess around with crazy palettes some more I'm all for it.

It means a lot to me you would bookmark my thread to come back to it, and showing me specifically which of my drawings caught your eye. Truly.

I think I've gotten in a state of mind where if I don't spend hours on it, it's not good. I feel like i'm cheating if I don't aim for a certain polished look. I'd like very much to get back to a more fluid and fearless way of drawing and experiment more, so I appreciate you telling me it has value.

Attaching art from today and yesterday night. Just more fanart <_>

there's a point at which rendering no longer accomplishes anything, and this varies depending on the purpose of the work, if any ('for rendering practice' is a valid reason). You may want to try locking yourself to a very specific timeframe in which to do one picture, if you're the sort of person who won't just freak out over the impending deadline.

in short time spent actually has no direct relation to the value of a painting and may actually make it worse, but you knew that, I think

(also you may want to abandon the term 'cheating' as it doesn't really exist in art*. I mean, digital art itself was thought of as 'cheating' for a long time. just learn what you need to learn)

    * if anyone's got a counterargument, smack me with it please

i think like what mfb has said, some time rendering doesn't serves much purpose ( besides that its awesomely fun ) , i think perhaps you can try for a stronger composition based approach, and leaving some parts loose to train yourself and some parts rendered? just a random suggestion.

    I definitely will.
I think i've gotten blind in my rush to improve and forgotten a lot of things I used to know about drawing.

Your comments have both given me a big boost. Thank you very much for your attention and feedback.
