    Must... remember... how to paint...

Picked up a doodle from a while ago to play with some color. I've been off the PS and tablet for a little while, I've pretty much forgotten how to color...

Thoughts? Advice? What's the dumbass simple thing I'm forgetting?

    Getting fearless...

Line art was hindering me, removed it. Much easier now... still, colors?

Augh! Now it's fuzzy... why is it so fuzzy... this is why I'm scared of venturing beyond the line art...

The fuzziness is there due to lack of edges. My paintings are always looks like that at this step. It's okay, just try to push further and give more definition to the shapes

I'm making mess here: Sketchbook .
    also on dA and blogspot

Thanks witcrack! I'm not used to working outside the confines of line art - I'm usually PS watercoloring scanned ink stuff.

Somehow, I'm producing something worthwhile. This is a new and interesting development.

A smaller brush would help to do the refinement of the edges you want sharper. Also remember that light color must mix with, not dominate, the surface color. So when your blue light hits purple or yellow, the surface does not necessarily become entirely blue. Lastly, the structures of the face are very unclear. Everything is flesh colored, and yet is so unnatural looking that you might see it as a mask of some kind. The nose/mouth area is especially vague. I have no clue what I'm looking at there. So I'd rework that, starting from the sketch.

meDrawUC - the blue light is high intensity, directional light that's supposed to be emanating from his eyepiece. However, that's a detail that gets painted on last - I just forgot and did it in the wrong order. It'll basically wash out anything it hits, but it only hits for a straight line, basically.

The overall lighting is a soft, diffuse orange.

I agree on the face, though, something I'm gonna have to deal with. The whole setup is supposed to be a gas-mask type deal. I'm still working through the general shapes. Once those are where I need them to be (like the eyepiece), the details will come.

I'm working on shaping up the cloak and hood now. Once I get that to a good place, probably the face or hands come next. The mask and the bracelets (hard to see in their current shape) are a matched set.

Thanks MT-Mystic. I'd seen that around before, but, until today, I've pretty much always relied on coloring in the lines. This is what I have now... running out of steam. That right hand was a doozy...

You're gettin' there, Abacus, don't sell yerself short! I'm keepin' an eye on this one, seein' how it develops. Early days yet, but you've got a good start already!
