Majoring in English and minoring in business?

Because artists need good communicating skills and business skills, do you think it is a good idea to Double major whatever design field you are in with English, while try to get a few classes in business?

English majors are good if you plan to teach English (at least in most departments), so I wouldn't burn the time. If you're going to get a degree, major in something that'll directly help you in the job market. The business minor would probably be useful.

I would ignore the english and just do business. Some basic english classes should be enough (and you are more interested in business writing than in trying to study ancient poetry ). Business should have classes on communication (it is very different than writing a book, business writing is VERY short and to the point using very low complexity...mmm i think like a 5th grade level is what they say).

And then you also learn things like how to manipulate the person you are talking to (such as making the focus of your letter more about how THEY benefit, so they will be more receptive).

Your thinking of Speech course rather then a English course.

The business degree is just, so the company can know you will able to say "Yes" to very thing the executives want.

But, really, do what you feel is necessary,

It's 3rd grade level, like most newspapers.

    Yes, imo it is.

knowlege of marketing may prove very valuable, wether you use it to sell yourself as an independent artist or just to be able to make your clients money, which obviously will make you more desirable.

There is quite some competition in the creative fields with a lot of technically skilled people, marketing is one of the things that an artist can use as a tool that can make a difference in his level of succes in the industry.

Majoring in English won't teach you to communicate - it sets you up for a career teaching English.

    Take small business classes.
