Mr. Urbane's Daily Sketchbook
Hey guys hows it going. My names Barry. I have been a fan of this site for sometime now and wanted to start a sketchbook to tract my progress.
I'm a college student living in Fort Worth, Texas. I use to draw as a child but stopped for one reason or another. I work as a Cadtech for a surveying company so I never really got out of the habit of drawing. This site has inspired me to get serious about my art and take it to heights I never thought was possible. Im actually thinking of majoring in Fine Art. I have two years to think about it so until then I want to concentrate on getting better.
I have done a couple of things in my sketch book that ill post.....now lol. Looking for critics so don't be afraid to say anything (harsh or not). Also don't have a scanner so sorry if the pics or crap. Sooooo..... here we go!

Glad you made a SB cool stuff. just keep working hard at it and you will improve a ton. As long as your drawings your not wasting time lol . Not sure if this has already been brought up or not but you should get yourself some anatomy books. you can get Bridgman and Loomis for free on the web, just look around, I like to use Scribd.com. Keep grinding away. There is a link to a TON of tutorials in my signature, take a look and see if you like any of them. Feel free to add to it if you have any that you don't see up there . Have fun.

Its been awhile since I have posted. Here is a little update of what i've been doing. Being without a scanner is starting to annoy me but ah well. Atleast i'm still drawing!!

Hey guys! Well I still don't have a scanner or a decent camera to take pics of my drawings but here are a few things I have been doing. There is an app on my phone called Sketchbook Mobile by Autodesk that I have been using. Its a GREAT app. Took me awhile to get use to drawing with my finger but I think im getting the hang of it.
First two drawings are anatomy studies and the last one is a wip I came up with. I see the importance of drawing on seperate layers now lol .

Started finishing the last sketch before one of my finals. I think it came out pretty well. All and all this app is great! I don't have my laptop or graphics tablet yet but this lets me experience what some of these softwares can do. Kind of brings finger painting to a new level lol.

Decided to do some anatomy studies with soft pastels. I definitly like working with the soft pastels but they are a little hard to control at times. If any of you guys have any tips for me I would really appreciate it.

More quick sketching in photoshop! The word urbane inspired me with this one.

When it comes to pastels/charcoal, you basically just have to get used to the fact that you're going to end up making a mess sometimes. One of the nice things about them is how smoothly they go on and how much you can blend them, so take advantage of that!
January 16th, 2011 #29
Thanks for the comment! The mess is why I like working with them lol. I for sure love the fact they go on so smooth and also the shade values you can get out of them. I definitely will be working with them a lot more.

Great stuff so far! Anatomy studies are especially good - keep them coming.
Your greyscale digital paintings seem to be your best - personally I would do more of them before going in to colour. I'm no expert though (struggle with the painting side of it myself).
