Leah Jay's sketchbook - first post

Hey everyone - Hi, nice to meetcha! Just real quick about me:
    1. Over 40. Long personal history of artmaking. I've been many other vocations before switching to Artist.
    2. Serious about art, learning, improvement.
    3. Dyed in the wool traditionalist - (however, am a decent Photoshop user)
    4. Have been at DA for nine months now with mixed results

This is a transitional phase for me in moving from DA to CA. It's a bit of a shock being among such talent. My instinct tells me this is a good thing. I look forward to improving with some real, valuable critique from those more skilled and experienced than myself.

Oh yes and I have no idea what to put up here or how, or how many items, or even if any of this is appropriate, or even how to categorize my work. Ahem. so here goes.....be gentle with me ;D

    Working on contest entry

Here is some WIP for ya
Again I hope this is appropriate for this thread. I asked for advice and was told to start here in "Sketchbooks"

I'm entering a contest on DA and the theme is "What Makes a Man?"
Here is my first preliminary drawing and watercolor pour for the background.
Sorry about the smudgey paper - I tried to save it a little in Photoshop with Dodge so that the drawing could be seen clearly /: He will grow legs! They will be robotic legs that he made himself - the name of the piece will be "The Self Made Man" - I'm also working with my husband on the Steampunk gears and robot stuff. He's a great artist too and should get his butt on here but he probably never will, haha. As far as reference for gears and robot stuff, I am coming up empty-handed D: I find these things to be difficult to draw.

Oh and please, critique and advice as I go would be WONDERFUL, should I post this stuff somewhere else also? Thanks!

ARgghhh still needs a lot of work. I need to get used to posting unfinished things though, so, here.

    Wow, these are all great!

My only piece of advice is to never stop making art!

I guarantee you that if I tried to use the same colors that you use in a painting, I would create some real garbage. However, when you do it, its masterful. I am looking forward to seeing more of your work.

In reply to your first post. I too was totally intimidated by the level of talent here, so that is what made me decide to join up and start working my fingers to the bone!

Self Made Man - completed from sketches above

This was a collaboration between myself and my spousal unit who draws machinery and gears particularly well. Colors, design, concept and rendering mine. We'll see if I win the contest I'm entering it in today! *crosses fingers*

Good luck on the contest! Your colouring style is intense and your rendering etc is intense. Love what I'm seeing here.

Portrait of a friend "Four Food Groups"

I've been lurking, but that doesn't mean I've stopped working ;D
I'm just focusing on DA right now - seems to be a lot more activity there. However, I haven't forgotten about you guys!
