I want to draw more from imagination.. all those studies are depressing me somehow. So have some boring lines! But at least they came straight out of my head. Only the faces on the first one and the small muscle-drawings are done with ref, all of the poses are from mind. I think I have much more problems with poses of female characters, hum.

I don't wanna talk about the 2003 piece. /o\ But I still know I have stolen the pose from some Soul Calibur Artwork.

Since I'm not bothering with painting/drawing perfect and regarding every detail anymore, I seem to find my flow~
On another note, songs by the french singer Zaz put me in such a strong drawing mood and make me... just happy. Maybe because she herself is immensely happy with doing what she likes the most~ I listen to it and want to show the world what I like to do the most. Strange, huh.
Holy crap that tumblr comic made me fall off my chair, thank you for the pick me up, i can basically relate to that in every way. Love your Chow entry, i dare the big bad wolf to f*** with that red riding hood. I also see you did a progression thing also, going back and re-doing old work to see how far you've come. In a few months i'll have to try out something similar.

1hr color study
You've definitely come a LONG way from circa 2003-4, haha. But I really adore your studies! I like that you have a healthy mix of men and women in your art. All too often it seems like people lean too far in one direction or the other (I'm guilty of that), but you've got a happy medium.

So, well. I have some kind of problem right now. I always loved to draw and I still love it, but it seems my inner motor just broke a few weeks ago. At some point I realized that this motor is driven by one or more special persons in my life. When I was younger I had a very very good friend and even though we barely managed to see each other more than two times a year it was always an adventure. When she was around we drew like crazy (like this http://tinyurl.com/6c7glrd ). She was so much better than me and I loved how she captured her ideas on paper. She was scribbling her hands off and when she didn't like a drawing, she just stopped and began another one. Her passion grabbed me, forced me to draw just like she did. I never was as good as her but she always pushed me forward.
Now she is extremely busy at university, so we don't even have time to talk regularly. Besides the pain of having nearly no contact (we are still very good friends though), it frustrates me to be alone on my journey when it comes to drawing. I force myself to draw at least something but it never satisfies me. A few years ago everything I did looked like shit but it was admired by a friend who I could connect with in every way possible.
Today I feel horribly alone. I need someone I'm there for, I can't exist just for myself. That's a big fault but I can't change it either. I want to draw for someone so that this person is happy when they see my stuff. I want to get better just for making beloved people happy.
Is that wrong? I really don't know. My head is just so empty.
Anyway, two studies. Does anybody know how to get a more... crisp/clean look? Everything is so blurry on my paintings (and no, the soft brush is not the reason).

You guys are the best Sorry I wasn't here for such a long time.
But I bring a few paintings with me. Mostly studies. First two are a beloved friend of mine. The 1000 Faces Challenge is a mixture of faces from photographs and from paintings/drawings I saved on my HD, hoping I will get better at drawing them.
The last one is the cover for a short story I wrote but I'm not satisfied yet. Any suggestions to make it look better (and where to put the title? D: )? The story is about a zombie who has forgotten everything but his dying wife and wants to get a nice dress for her so she can leave this world with a smile on her face. But on his way home he gets attacked by humans who crush his brain and leave him lost and without any memories - forgetting even his task and his wife.

Hey, concerning that crisp touch you want to get, you might want to try plain square brushes. Hard-edged rounds don't do the trick, since despite their hard edges, their very shape prevents you from drawing broken lines, but you already know that.
You may also try to paint with neat values in full or near-full opacity, instead of pen pressure-related opacity. That'll set space, depth and shapes in a more radical way. This made a huge difference for me since I started using it.
Once your painting is done, you can still use a sharpening filter, if that's not enough.
Don't give up.

Some stuff from the last couple of weeks. I'm not very motivated and there is so much stuff to do for university, blargh. I don't really feel like improving.
First one is a comparison between a Zelda painting from 2009 or so and now, conentrating on Links face. That's why Zelda looks so shitty :>

As for the square brush - you can check the Wip gifs on my sketchbook - I use it in every step of my painting, first in very big size to set general values, then smaller and more opaque as I go into details. I prefere it to soft brushes because I can define clear areas of dark/light values (first 2 or 3 steps on the wips)
For crisp details, like in the eyes, or to draw wrinkles, thin hair, nostril contour, mouth crease and such, I use a very thin outline brush, about 3px big.
