    Making paintings look painterly

    I've been struggling a lot lately with trying to get things to look painterly and not so artificial. This bothers me a lot and I always end up doing the same thing; trying to render everything I think sucks.

    I'm doing studies and all this but I never achieve that look I want. Most of you guys get it right but I just don't get it.

    This is what my stuff looks like:

    I got close to it on the arms on this piece but most of it looks very smokey and boring.

    I keep rendering things out even though it could be left blocky - less is more. But if I do that it looks like shit.

    Most of your edges are hard- both along the contours as well as the modeling within the form. You need a range of edge qualities, from hard to soft. You also need to know when to use harder or softer edges.

    Even just a few well-placed soft edges can make something look "painterly" pretty quickly.

    Also, it wouldn't hurt to play around with your brush settings... (for one thing, you can get greater control over hardness/softness/raggedness/precision of edges if you know how to tweak the settings to suit your taste.)

    Plus you can mess around with brush settings to get more texture and unpredictability in your strokes, which helps keep things from looking too smooth and "digital".

    It sounds to me like your problem here is a weakness at basic drawing more than anything else. Because you're not entirely sure how to draw something, you blend over it or render it until it looks passable, whereas a stronger drawing could be left more planar and painterly and still hold up.

    And use much variation of opacity to paint too, keep the opacity same, then work with edges(which is friggin hard to do), but you can get there

    In addition to the drawing fundamentals, as mentioned, forget about colours for rendered pieces, at least for now. That doesn't mean paint them in b&w, it means concentrate on value (and later, saturation) rather than colour (hue). Colour isn't important until you know how to create a good piece based on value, and even then it's normally secondary. Concentrating on colour before you get to the stage where you're comfortable defining form will lead to flat, distrorted imagery with compartmentalised colour, like the one you have there.

    you should try experimenting with the smudge tool to soften some of your edges as you go.. keep it at 100% strenght and use a brush with pressure set on opacity.. a kind of scratchy tip shape works welll with the smudge too.

    there are a lot of "how do I make my art look like those guys' art" threads around here. Do whatever you want man.

    But if you're truly unhappy with your own work (just dont beat yourself up about it) then yeah, the comments above are sound advice.
