thought i should start one of these...
I was a figurative gallery painter up until the last 2 or 3 years when i got disillusioned with the gallery scene...
stopped painting for those last few years...
found this place...
got my hands on a wacom, and photoshop...
giving art another shot.
now that you're caught up to speed here is my old oil work for a frame of reference. they are all large scale (anywhere from 2'x4', to 6'x4') and painted on gessoed lightweight wood. also no brushes were used making these. 100 percent palette knives.
my next updates will be used to post all my digital work up until now.

placeboast: thanks for the nice words, but mothers are sexy! seriously though i don't plan on quitting, but as you can see below I've still got alot to work on.

here's a cow update.
made him more fat and gluttony. he does live off of the blood of fallen gladiators after all. kind of diggin his face right now. wish i had more time to draw. 70 hours of work a week isnt good for my art fix. oh well i shall prevail somehow!
I love the work you're showing us @ the cow section. You also make some bad ass paintings. You're obviously a skillfull artist.
In particular i like your visions on normal day to day live v.s. living your dreams... at least, thats the idea a lot of your work inspires on me. (i'm not sure how to put it, i just came back from a holiday)
About your weekly creatures, i like the way you pay a close intention to the "assignment", and never fail to make a creative ánd functually looking creature.
I'd say; keep up the good work, and love to see more of your creations in the future.
YUZworks: thanks for the nice words. i think i leaned toward more real life when i was painting traditionally, but the reason my work is getting more fantastical is because its a good excuse to try new things with photoshop, which is still a pretty new media to me.

i was listening to Dave Rapoza interviewing Brad Rigney on his stream, while trying out m@'s brushes for the first time and this is what popped out of that wacky concoction.
then i added some color... probably made it worse.

from your first post, sounds like we come from a similar background.
I tried the gallery world for a few years in new york, some things happened, but mostly hated the all the crap and crappy people that came along with it. But mostly I felt there was a real lack of creativity and originality and was struggling for any inspiration.
Then I found this site, got a wacom, and have been going at it for a couple months.
glad to hear there is another fine art veteran on board!
as far as your work goes:
I really like what you're doing with the creatures, keep at it. The shapes, and forms are excellent.
would like to see more of your general landscapes though. I think with your color palette, and sense of light you could really say something

man, those creatures look totally otherworldy. I can't say which one I love the most.
Some crits: I don't know if it's intentional or not, but your digital stuff has somehow less color variation, less intense (saturated) colors, less working color schemes than your traditionals. I can't really tell how to fix it - maybe you should give a try to Corel Painter. It's much closer to how traditional media works than Photoshop.

penpoint: yeah! traditional background ftw! yeah art in the gallery scene isnt fun when you don't show with people who have no idea how to sell art. i have no idea how some gallery owners get to where they are. also i never really dug the whole shmoozing deal. its so fucking annoying when your at a show and some rich fucker comes up and says, "so. what were you thinking about when you did this?" it always made me wanna say "i was thinking that i got into this stuff so i wouldn't have to make up a bullshit answer to people that asked me that question in order to think that I'm DEEP and buy my art, boy was i wrong" never had the balls to do it though hahaha.
as far as landscapes... i should do some, maybe if i feel up to it in the next few weeks i'll give it a shot.

novbert: thanks! i think the reason my traditionals have more of a cohesive color scheme to them is because i always used the same 6 paints when i painted, lead white, naples yellow, vermillion, cobalt blue, raw umber, and burnt umber. you can make pretty much any color out of those, except for real crazy vibrant ones. as for digital I'm out of my color formula, so I'm trying to figure it out still. thanks for the tip on painter. i haven't had a chance to check it out yet, I'll see if i can't get my hands on a copy.
workin on a new c.o.w. its a creature used for assassination purposes, mine can phase through matter. here he is phaseing through a fence.

You are very talented! I love the paintings in the first post. All your creatures arre great too. You have a cool style that is present in all the creature designs. The only thing I miss is perhaps a little more defined surroundings. Use more props. This doesn't necessarily take focus away from the creature itself.

dear colleagues of the gnixxian biological research facility.
we would like to thank you for your work on the gradius threaver you have supplied us with. it has been a shining success in helping with our efforts to hunt down the especially difficult criminal element that has arisen on our prime world. you were quite right in your assumptions that it would be able to use its unique phasing abilities on industrial materials, and not just the biological material of gnixx. that ability, along with its powerful tracking senses, have made the elimination of previously very hard targets almost laughably easy.
we were also quite pleasantly surprised with the combat abilities you were able to train it. one instance the threaver phased through a target at a very extreme speed, the target dropped dead immediately, and upon inspection the threaver was somehow able to slice very clean slashes through the targets body on the way through. the assumption is that it was able to maintain its claws in a material form while the rest of its body was able to phase.
as a final note, we need to warn you that the training techniques you have applied to such a powerful creature must be kept secret at all costs. if any criminal element were to learn of the **.*ghx sonic frequency that disrupts its phasing abilities, such an element could feasibly acquire and train a threaver of their own and i don't need to tell you the trouble the colonies would be in with that situation.
