Round #185 Rusty Metal Eater
#185 Rusty Metal Eater
Thought I'd go for a more classic topic this week since it feels like some of these more complex ideas are turning people off. Imagine a beast that roams the junkyards at night, or has come into existence in a post apocalyptic world where rusty metal reigns supreme. Imagine what effects tetanus and other various diseases would ravage this animals body as it ate its way through pound after pound of razor sharp, delicious industrial waste.
Monday August 16th, 2010.
Finals go here: http://="http://www.conceptart.org/f...d.php?t=193908

Looking forward to it. Glad to see you back man, hope everything is going well on your end.
I live in australia so the deadline is either today...Or later on tomorrow/tonight?
I'll enter but im not sure how polished it'll be for the time limit. Also all topics that have been chosen are great. I dont mind the complex ones, I just glad there's one at all.
Hahaha funny coincidence, I just had a shit load of dental work done so I'm gonna give my creature huge badass steel teeth to help help him get thru the delicious rusty treats!
Pretty sure he just accidentally put today's date seeing as how he made the post this morning...
Anyway, here's some very early WIP.
Idea is that it melts rock and metal in it's throat like a furnace, and digests it from there.
They are common to find in off world junkyards as metal is abundant, and is preferable to these infernal reptiles.

Interesting topic, I'll be home from my vacation in couple of days so hopefully I'll have time to participate in this one
As of the end of lunch today I have this much done.
Going for some sort of reclusive primate-meets-moth kind of creature. Eating a car. There's going to be young kind of scurrying around in the foreground and background, with some green bioluminescence. I'm going to fix his face in the next few stages to make him look less like a prawn from District 9.

excellent idea! should be fun.
sweet! finally back, definitely going to get in on this one!
I haven't done anything in months, and I haven't done anything like this before so I'm a little slow... (I'm relatively new to digital painting.) But I like where I'm going with this.
Very cool. I'm on board with this one!
well welcome back scorge, hope yer feelin better, there's lots of rain in the forecast here so I should be able to contribute this round
Aaaargh. Promised to go visit my parents later this week. X_X They live 7h trip away so I'll stay there for a few days too.
I may rush something together for this one. Or I may not.
I'm leaning towards number 3. Kinda dig the hermit crab idea where everything it eats becomes a part of it. Thoughts?
First post on this site! W00t!
Anyway, here's my idea for the topic:
Its a kind of creature that has an incredible digestive system. In fact, almost its entire body is devoted to digesting the rusty metal and debris that is its food. The creature rips chunks of material off with the powerful turtle-like beak. Obviously eating such things is not easy so first the 'food' sits in the large sac under its mouth and starts to digest.
Once it starts to break down anything harmful to the animal is released via the large pores under its eyes. Any thing that cannot be broken down into a gas or liquid is expelled through the rather large rectal tube. Appetizing, I know.
Okay. I've refined the design a bit after an hour or so of sketching and resketching. I'll still likely be making major editations over the course of the piece, but here's an shot just to give the overall mood of the piece.
In terms of concept: the creature eats rusted metal and as a result much of it's body is in a constant state of degrading, making it's life cycle pretty limited. In order to maximize it's life it's removed it's brain and key senses (in this case, smell and sight) to an area far from it's digestive system. The mouth leads directly to the stomach and liver all of which use highly corrosive materials to process the metal. It's excretory system is mostly degraded and is thus often mostly spine and hints at previous organs.
Hi all, my first c.o.w entry here - nothing too dramatic, a creature very much rooted in today's fauna. I figured digesting metals would come down to a chemical process and hopefully that comes across in the image.
And some WIP images:
Still new to the site, and new to painting...but i will finish this for the deadline.
(hope this meets the rules standards for min skill level)
Im still very new to painting

I'm going to be out of commission for the next four or five days, so I'm dropping out of this one. Good luck everyone.
Hi there, Pixie Trick and thanks for your feedback. I notice, as I look through the various creature threads, that there is something of a culture of creative, outlandish designs - which is really cool, but I've bucked the trend on this occasion for a few reasons. The primary restriction is the time-frame; scrap yards and post apocalyptic junk suggest a close temporal relationship with humanity, and a humanity whose technology hasn't gone beyond rustable metals. Which maybe gives us maybe a few thousand years to work with at best, not much time in evolutionary terms.
Among the macro fauna, herbivores seem a good candidate to develop the kind of digestive fortitude to deal with metals. The choice of a rhino descendant is mostly arbitrary. obviously their power and heavy skin makes a certain kind of sense, but also because it is nice to think that these endangered creatures have some sort of future.
But yeah, rendering is fun too.
Some great wips there, looking forward to see more!
Very uncertain if I'm gonna have time to finish this since I have alot going on right now and also I just got a new tablet I'm not used to so it takes ages to get things right...
Anyway my concept is some sort of small, slow and sluggish animal that scavenges the ground for tasty scraps, something like this:
I didn't want to use half a week to design the critter so I just went with this one that I sketched on paper during HoN match.
Just playing with the colors.
Quick thumbnail, been messing around with different designs for a while. The creature is some lizard type thing, uses acid to soften it's food, thinking excess minerals cause bony growths from the skeleton.
