It's art all right. It's just terribly executed.

All art is an "attempt." Otherwise, it's a summer rerun on network TV. All attempts involve the possibility of failure. The greater the attempt, the greater the failure. This reinforces the theory that all artists need real "balls" before they need all the little things like skill, facility, and training. Otherwise, they'd never want to be artists in the first place.

For anyone wanting to be an artist, failure is NOT an option...it's a requirement.

And when you fail, do it with style.

Do you know what's also funny about this? if it was a guy instead of a girl, he would get arrested without even finishing the performance, women can get away with so much more than men in this respect.

I just can't take this stuff seriously - and judging by some of the audience's expressions (girl with a black cap on on 4.40mins, and the blonde girl in the background reaching for a better look) I'm sure they don't either! It's mildly amusing for me at best.

    That is a big bottle.

Now take 2 minutes to open it, smear the contents all over yourself, have a little 'play time' and post it on youtube.

Thank you OP for the post it made me laugh quite a bit. Sure I started watching the whole thing - expecting to be wowed - but nope.. I started skipping forwards and was bored.

    Initial reactions were:
    1. Her parents must be thrilled to dump that money in performing art school for this.
    2. Hipster kids can't open cans - ouch. I was semi rooting for the can to slip loose and cut her arm when she had it propped against her leg.
    3. Why must everything be shit? I mean there are nice things in the world - blue summer skies, puppy dog tails, and alcohol.
    4. When did jean jackets come back in fashion? More importantly - when did they ever leave?
    5. I would have enjoyed this more if there as a stationary camera set behind her to film the audience... to see who is really jaded to have witnessed this in a class project.
    6. Oddly - I have given some presentations at work and school that hold similarities to this young lady's performance. Yelling, self masturbation, inability to open things, people peeing everywhere, and shitty food.

Pretty much this. I figured I'd let the rich kids keep the word, and I would just refer to myself as an illustrator, animator, etc.

There's a whole bunch of this in Charlotte, too. There are a few gems in the filth, but it's a lot to wade through. One movie we watched was so bad that I had to buy it the "director." All his movies were just ad libbed non-sequiturs between him and some woman. Then he just put the footage through a lot of adobe after-effects and added some music/noise stuff on top. The way that one of the audience members said the 3D blobs (with completely fucked normals) was like "ballet" reminded me of Ayn Rand and how she said both parties participating in this kind of "art" are just deceiving each other....and sometimes aware of each other's deception.

So I've read the four pages and I'm only posting because I guess no one has said this yet...

I'm always amazed/disgusted when things like this happen. I don't know the full story involved, whether it's supposed to be ironic, who this girl really was or her intentions. I get the feeling there's not much to tell. For me what makes this bad is, first of all, it gives art a bad name, and second it becomes expected of us. These people in the video are just kids. They're in art school. They're not spending decades honing their conceptual ideas and visual metaphors, etc. They're not practicing and perfecting their performance the way actors do in theatre. This isn't the product of 20 years of hard work and intellectual rigor. It's just what's expected and forced on impressionable children, with no (apparent) ability to think for themselves.

I guess I'm being ultra liberal here, thinking of this girl as the victim, but I can't help but feel she is being violated, even if she's using free choice. I mean, this is the kind of thing you usually charge perverts for. One poster mentioned how the parents would feel wasting their money. I look at it in terms of, what if she were my daughter? I'd want to kick the professor's ass.

Meanwhile, every great artist I know of never refers to themself as an artist. Here on this thread, elsewhere, and even Stapleton Kearns just had a post about this on his blog. You people are artists, and you're damn good, and you should be proud of yourselves! I call myself an artist, not to put on airs, but because that's what I do. If you make art, you're an artist. When people's eyebrows raise, I just show them my work and see the relief in their eyes. The world needs more craft oriented/dignified painters and sculptors/etc calling themselves artists so we can take the word back.

I think I met this girl once. She was riding a fixed gear bike outside of a starbucks and holding a pbr in one hand and an american spirit in the other. we got to talking, and she told me she was vegan and worked at american apparel and then showed me her new triangle tattoo. she then got a call on her iphone, said "peace out bro," and left to go thrifting and find used vinyl records.

The thing that seriously bug me over this is: where were the Faculty members in all of this? Have taught/lectured/taken workshops in schools and on campus etc when invited in, over the last 15 or so years. Any lecturer or student who wanted to stage any performance of any sort had to jump through hoops to get approval to ensure that it had some sort of merit. Or maybe this was not a considered vetted performance in which case a young woman has just very effectively wrecked any prospects for a life free of ridicule.

    Quite sad really.

We are remembered only by what we leave behind.
