Evoke the Dragon (update October 7th, Volume 2 released)

long time no post outside of the sketchbookartists' forums : ] but it's good to be here.

I've had the privilege of working with Jason Manley and crew on 2 workshop DVD's where I get to go into detailed explanation of questions that I often get asked. The first DVD covers a methodology behind brainstorming thumbnails and disconnecting your drawing skills from your design philosophy to explore every inch of your possibilities, designs, colors, and composition.

In the 2nd volume I explain how you can adapt to unpredictable changes and fixes at ever stage of the drawing as well as taking a napkin-sketch doodle from thumbnail to a fully rendered concept illustration. The final painting is 26 hours long edited and sped up to fit in 2 hours with many changes from critiques and lots of critters!
    Thanks for stopping by!

Cool dinos; second one's my favorite. Some crits: from a composition point of view, I'm not a big fan of the pairs of identical dinos in 1 and 4. Also, I feel there's some spots that have been left a bit too rough, especially the little pterodactyls in number 4. Seems like they should be just a bit more than colored shapes.

good eye man thanks! I never really realized my phase of pairs 'till I posted this, I should carry them through a little more to convey a sense of ecosystem. That and I should do more robots for shits'n'giggles

Oh my dear lord, an ornithopter! Love the Dune pieces particularly, but all your work has a stunning sense of light and those colors are gnarly! Thanks for sharing!

Sammy...these, in my humble opinion, are an excellent epitome of concept art; adverse to the comment posted above, I believe that the duplication of species displays a continuity of evolution and represents social herding. In agreeance to the previous comment, extra detail could be added - at times I found myself asking, for instance, what is in his holster? Some objects should be left to the viewer's experience, but others may best be defined by what you are intending. Kudos to your work!

    Thanks,
    Bruce

Stunning work. I had a couple Quetzacoatlus pics floating around my (paper) sketchbooks... was thinking of turning them into steeds of some sort.

    Very inspiring work.

That's why this piece is so great, SamRaski. Because the design of the picture plane is so sophisticated and the silhouettes read so well there is no reason to detail the small birds. It will hurt your design to render every square inch of the canvas.
