Background: Oil skimmers do exactly what they say: skim oil off of the surface of water. BP isn't the only one in need of this service as their spill is not the first and will not be the last. Modern skimmers have several drawbacks, one of the most important being a need for calm waters.
Your skimmer may be any size, from personal, to world disaster, and any time period, from steam punk to super futuristic.
Hmmm... no one wants to make oil sucking drones attached to a main mother ship? Giant monstrosities of rotating metal wheels covered in slime? A hovercraft that floats above spills and scrapes it off the top?

Watch out for the dream killers. They'll tell you to quit, they'll say you'll never make it, they'll say you're crazy, they'll say they have your best interests at heart... And if you listen to them they're right.
hey Pixie Trick, i am onto something, just need some additional time to get something presentable.
perhaps I will do a oil sucking pirate ship under the name of "hawkpraise" with a cool idea hanging over it, to get a continuity to the last IDW without vulgarity from my side of course
just kidding, but it will be a shiplike thing.
Here are a few of my ideas...they need to be fleshed out a bit more, but it's a start.
I actually started with a hovercraft idea, and then thought about a standard-looking ship what would sail through with this great big mouth, like a basking shark scooping up contaminated water and processing it inside the ship.
The last three are, I now realize, a bit like Boba Fett's Slave I, which was purely unintentional. Originally it was going to fly with the tail bit forward like a head, and the flight deck would be at the end. Now it's a bit more like a backhoe, where the flight deck is at one end, and the skimmer control deck is at the tail, kind of like where a boom operator would sit in a KC-135 or something. The ship would actually move from station to station the standard way (or at least, with the tail pointing to the rear), but would then move backwards during oil skimming operations. A separator field would activate which would basically suck the oil right out of the water like a magnet and store it in barrels to bring back ashore.
Note: I haven't quite figured out this scanner yet...I'm trying to get my drawings to look sharper, but it's giving me the business. Friggin' technology.
i was inspired, the previous round gave me the excellent idea of designing an oil guzzling troll,
whom hides his weak drawing skills with computer generated cg.
but then i thought, why would i waste my time?
