Powering through man, watch your proportions mostly your legs looking a little stunted in the last batch of pencils. go go!

Ahhh, such a nice sketchbboook. I love the way you use textures, and you seem to have a great blend of hard and soft edges in your work to make it look very naturalistic; I can see that especially with some of your studies. I think my favorite piece so far is of the three kappas, ahaha! Great work.
sup mate! Those last couple of photo studies look great! And of course that swamp dragon on the previous page is fantastic! I really enjoy your rendering style! Keep it up!
Art is not about competing against others and being better than everyone else, but it is about competing against yourself and discovering your greatest potential!
ahhhh those some sick studies lance! apply dem bitches
Excellent studies! :]

I was sure I was already subscribed to this thread... come back to find pages and pages of unseen stuff. Which turned out to be a plus since I enjoyed going through them so muchSo much improvement, so inspiring... your enthusiasm just comes through completely, I'd read through a few posts and just get pumped to do art
Thanks for the motivation boost! Subscribed for sure now. :')
Hey hey! Really nice sketchbook Lance. Your studies are very very good! You've shown time and again that you can push those to a very high level. Here and there I can see a few little drawing issues in them - proportions and angles - just watch out for it. I'm also seeing a lot of improvement in your compositions and your story telling. The hard work is really showing in results. Nothing much else to say except keep pushing it!

ah, CA's back up :]
so, ive been gone for a while again. i went to the massive black workshop back in early august and that was AMAZING! met a ton of immensely talented and inspiring people and learned shitloads. i highly recommend workshops to anyone that can make it out to one, even if its a bit out of your way. it will seriously light a fire up your ass! ill organize everything i took in and go over it a bit in a later post.
anyway, even before the workshop ive been analyzing my portfolio and have been unhappy with the overall "feel" of many of my pieces. not enough narrative being the main issue. i also feel that over the last couple years ive lost track of the things that really got me into art in the first place. ive been doing studies and mostly just trying to fill in obligatory "blanks" in my portfolio, like "hmm, dont have many characters, better do some of those. fantasy, check. sci-fi, check...etc" the things i learned at the workshop emphasized this even more for me.
so instead of going straight back into that after the workshop, i actually took some time off from the hardcore art id been doing all summer to just relax. i did some art, but most of that time was spent soaking up inspiration and just trying to rediscover all the things that inspired me to get into art in the first place.
it was actually REALLY helpful. it allowed me to clear my mind and on top of the things i learned at the workshop i feel like i can approach painting a lot differently now. i dont feel restricted to what everyone else is doing just to fill my portfolio but feel like i can branch out a lot more and paint things i find to be just fucking awesome. ive got a ton of new ideas floating around my head i never would have thought of before, and all the ideas i had before got improved and expanded upon.
im taking a lot of classes this semester so im pretty busy, but im starting to get back into the swing of things. im gonna be a dick and not post anything in this post () but i should be back fairly soon, refreshed and ready to kick some ass! cheers to anyone who's stopped by!
oh, and some overdue replies:
Jessibelle: always really happy when i can do that for peoplecheers!
Pierce: thanks man!
CONtra: yeah, i still cant believe that haha. pretty sure ive seen your stuff on here before as well. lets definitely meet up some time!
Glad you got some sort of revelation man! Patiently awaiting more art from you!
I love these peeps.
cheers man! makes me really wish I could go to a workshop.
Ludic: sorry for the wait man :/
skMOP: you should try to make it out to one! even if you have to travel pretty far, its totally worth it. hope
man, this semester is kicking my ass. im taking 18 credits this year, plus my shoulders are a lot better and im spending a lot more time in the gym (i do college gymnastics on top of everything else) still dont have much to show because i havent had as much time for the concept art stuff, but ive been slowly learning some 3d (maya) in one of my classes and im taking on some pretty ambitious oil painting stuff. heres a little teaser to show im not dead (yet)
(sorry for shitty phone picture)
cheers
so as i said before, school this year has kept me pretty damn busy (mostly because im way too overambitious with projects) and i havent had much time for digital painting or keeping much of a presence here D: i wanted to finish most of this stuff up a bit more before i posted any of it, but it looks like that wont be for a while unfortunately (i think its all from summer). anyway, heres a ton of wips and sketches ill hopefully be able to come back to soon
some doodles for the team challenge i had to drop out of ;_;
^for the lolz
and random things:
this is all pretty old, but i figured ive been pretty shitty with updating so i should put it up.
oh, and heres some of the progress in my 3d modeling class. FINALLY starting to get the hang of it. still a lot of kinks to work out with the UV maps (reason for the stretched textures), but its coming along. btw, im planning on modeling a city. two months left in the semester......fuck me
new wip oil paintings from my painting class coming soon!
Nasty awesome update man, especially the top one
I love these peeps.
Seems you are in a pretty similar situation to what i used to do man haha, i used to be bogged down with 3D work all the time when all wanted to do was go home and draw.

Dude some of your photo studies are insanely good. But I think my favourite parts or your sketchbook are some of your environment concepts. Beautiful.![]()
thanks guys :]
heres what ive been up to for my painting class so far
quick color in photoshop over some pencil sketches:
and some progress on the first one (shitty picture quality)
ive got the second one started but its just a monochrome wash so far. and just for some reference these are 2x3.5' (~60x105cm) oil paintings. still a whooooooooooole lot to do, but ill keep things updated
ps, itching to do some digital painting, might try to squeeze something in in the near future....
im a day late, but happy international self-portrait day! sadly, this is my first time participating....time to start a new tradition!
little less than 2 hours

The man stabbing the man stabbing the man made me laugh. Awesome sketchbook!
hey guys, been workin on final projects the last few weeks so i should have something to show with those fairly soon. been tryin to keep at it in between working on those, heres a little wip i did for this weeks chow. its pretty strange haha......its 3am D:
poops
Nice WIP, Life this week isn't it? I just realized that those were fetuses... fucking metal! Anyway, welcome back and good luck on those projects.
Yeah, so ive been gone for almost a year now. im not really gonna get into too much detail as to what happened, but basically this last school year was total shit and for the most part i didnt have time to commit to doing any finished personal pieces and had to put up with a ton of the typical "art school bullshit" we all know and love. i shouldve been doing shorter studies and sketches and whatnot in between but to be honest i really started letting the school thing get into my head.
anyway, point is i have almost no finished work to show from the last school year (at least not personal work i would want to put into my portfolio) and didnt feel like posting all the unfinished/half-started things i did over the year.
schools been out for a while now and ive been getting back into the swing of things but ive been having trouble committing to getting the new things finished (surprise surprise haha) and have pretty much just been trying to get all the ideas ive had this last year "on paper" so to speak. ive just been hopping from piece to piece and as soon as i get something vaguely established i kinda just move on to something new ahaha. anyway, i figured its about damn time i got back to updating this thing again so lets get this ball rolling!!!
heres only a fraction of the stuff ive started on. i seriously have at least a dozen and a half unfinished things (some old, some new) floating around and i would like to get back and polish up at least a few of them before i start aiming to get some more freelance work for the summer. so heres some of the more presentable ones in various stages of completion (but none of them finished)
also, the one thing that kept me sane this last year was a 3D class i got to take for both semesters. i got all the way into some pretty awesome rigging and animation type stuff and hopefully i can upload something showing that. heres a screenshot for now. modeled in zbrush, retopologized in modo, and rigged and (slightly) animated in maya
so yeah, theres some of what ive been doing. still feeling very rusty but at the same time i feel like im approaching illustrations in a much different way than i had been before. im going to TRY to get back into regular updates on here, as well as starting up sketchbook threads on other sites as well. still have a fair amount of things to show and new stuff in the works, so i hope to be back here soon.
