    Dipz108: Sketchbook

Hey, i'm new to this :/ my name's Deepesh, I'm 17 years old and want to go into Illustration/Concept art/storyboarding. I'm currently in sixth form and have been drawing for as long as I can remember. I've only started taking it seriously recently and am desperate to improve! alot!

Here's just some random pieces atm... Don't have a scanner right now, so i'll upload what I can. Critique is encouraged

*What I can't upload atm: some anatomy, poses, portraits (I'll try and get them up asap)*

Just a crappy oil painting of me... the transition from jaw to neck is quite horrible, I know :/ - any critiques are appreciated!

NO IDEA why there are no comments in here! Your work is really nice You have a nice eye for detail and proportion These portraits done in graphite at the top are amazinggg, sad you didn't finish them though :/ I have not used oil paint so I can't give any critiques with that..but they are coming along nicely. Maybe do some face studies, then try and tackle another self portrait

Welcome I'm not sure what the BEST way is...but some Loomis and Bridgman face constructions would be good to look at

Dayum, your oils are getting better, the transition from jaw to kneck on post #4 isn't bad all, though it seems as if you've just focused on rendering your face rather than on what it is supported by.

    keep going dude!

    Exon needs your critique!

Your sketches are just great! Can i ask how big the first pencil drawing is? ive tried getting that level of smoothness with pencil but maybe i just need to work a bit bigger.

I cant really offer much more because your sense of colour is so far beyond me!!

Exon - Thanks.. and "what it's supported by" you mean the skeletal structure? I didn't think about that, cheers.

8bit - It was on A4 ... the actual drawing was a little smaller than the full A4 though... then when my art teacher/technician mounted it for display...to my HORROR...they had cut it down to the size of the actual drawing :| ... now it's a small bit of paper with a great big dirty mark on her beautiful forhead :'( sorry.. very traumatic time for me.

the two pencil ones are really good, are they done from photo reference?
ive been staring at the newer stuff and i can't really think of anything to crit, being a beginner. on the last one you did, the eye on the left seems exceptionally white, maybe add some colour to it?
anyway im subscribing to your sb

aks9 - Yep, photo reference. They took a VERY long time though, I've developed a totally new approach to pencil now (I'll upload some stuff in a bit) - though I may do some long winded ones in the future... I just think it wastes time doing too many of them :/
Thanks for the critique. I just gave up with that last oil painting through depression tbh, I'm not happy with it at all :/ - I'll keep the eye thing in mind for my next self-portrait
and thank you, I'll check out your sb once I upload some stuff..

God I hate uploading stuff on this, so long winded.
These are just a few things from a year ago - just thought I may as well upload them..
I have alot more to put up, but I have to drop the file sizes down :@ :@

Good sketchbook man, your renderings really nice. Good studies in that last post aswell. Keep up the studies, you got any imagined stuff? Id like to check some of that out, you know see what youve learned and putting it to practice.

I thought I'd leave the message on your SB instead you know ;D
People are usualy off in their own world at coffee shops, they will rarely notice you drawing them and when they do, from my experience they dont care. Ive been approached a couple times and people are always happy to see an artists sketchbook, theyre understanding. Give it a go man, itll be worth it.

haha, that last bit made me laugh. right, I'll upload some stuff now, I'll include some imagined work aswell, though they're not up to a...decent standard yet. at all.

Just got back from watching INCEPTION. What an amazing movie. It would be pretty scary if everyone just turned and looked at me while I'm drawing starbucks. (You'll only understand that if you've seen the movie )

Here's some Civardi studies, Hand studies, and crap from imagination.

The digital is just a quick idea, (1hour digi sketch - like sparth himself ) - There's this 'soul-catching' creature in my dream (sort of inspired by: Dead Space/Big Trouble in Little China/Mortal Kombat/Doom3..and I guess there's a 'bit' of Spirited Away in there).. I'm trying to re-create him. He isnt quite there yet, just recording my idea before it gets lost in this mind

btw, I know on the pen sketch, the hand holding the staff....is messed up. too small, staff too big. I could have saved it with a glove - no idea why I didnt :/

great work with those anatomy studies!
the one showing the 3 figures with muscle, it seems to me their legs are too short maybe?

im impressed that you could figure out the skeletons on those posemaniac studies. was that hard? how long did it take you to learn the skeleton, was that completely from imagination?

yeah, I see what you mean about the short legs. One of my friend's has pointed that out as well
well honestly, those posemaniac/skeletons was way before I started doing in depth skeletal stuff. If you just scribble down the skeleton a few times from reference, you'll soon know the general shapes, not long at all. You'll notice the limb bones aren't exactly the correct shapes.. its just the overall jist of the skeleton I've conveyed (yep it was completely from imagination... using the pose as a guide of course)

    and thanks!!

just a quick, random character I did today..
still working on the story behind her.. - one of her legs is robotic (leg may have been cut off in battle somehow?)
