looking for movies about famous artists

Hi, recently reading an article and it mentioned that the artist watched movies on other famous artists: "but says he really learned to paint from films about artists such as Francis Bacon and Pablo Picasso".

I'd like to watch some, can anyone recommend a movie about an artist? Im not expecting them to be great movies but hey, still could be interesting.

I mean real artists, biopics or soemthing. not just movies where the protagonist happens to be an artist. thanks y'all

Frazetta: Painting with Fire is a really good film. I must have watched this 100 times. It's not 100% true, because it's the legend and not the true story.

Simon Schama's: Power Of Art is a pretty good show. He is a great art historian. He really knows how to tell the story behind a painting.

I recently found a DVD of the BBC TV series "The Impressionists." The writing was a bit silly at times and it was odd to hear all those Frenchmen with thick English accents. Otherwise, it was entertaining.

If you like Picasso there's "The Mystery of Picasso" that you might find interesting.

Look for a fascinating Russian film called "Andrei Rublev" about the 15th century painter that's more of a history lesson than a biographical film.

There's an old film with Charles Laughton as "Rembrandt" that I'd recommend, and Robert Altman's "Vincent & Theo" is the best of the Van Gogh films I've seen. "Gauguin The Savage" had a good performance from David Carradine.

If you enjoyed "Lust For Life" check out "Moulin Rouge" with Jose Ferrer as Lautrec.

Others that come to mind: Derek Jarma's "Caravaggio," "Artemisia," "I Shot Andy Warhol," "Pollock," "Edward Munch," and oh yeah, "Crumb."

It's fucking awesome! Absolutely hysterical! Don't watch it thinking that it's a doc about Banksy, though... It's basically about Mr. Brainwash.

As a countercultural icon I suppose one might justify the inclusion of Crumb.
