    The book 'o learning!

Hey there ladies and gents =)
The other day I was looking through a lot of the sketchbooks on here, admiring the works of such folk as SamsonsReaper, Luness, aiRaGe, Fregy and Jama. I find them all dead inspiring and am such a fan of their work, and I was sitting there thinking...

"...I wish my final work was half as good as these guys' sketches"

when I was accosted by my friend who said

"Give it a go, can't hurt and these people can help you"

So here I am, long time lurker, first time poster and my end goal is to become a good environment artist; I was hoping that the wonderful community here could help me achieve it.

I don't have much of an arty background to be honest, I didn't go to any arty school or anything like that, but I'm determined to learn.

What I have adopted is the "Speedy a Day" approach, to take an hour on my lunch break to sketch out a scene in my mind.

What I kindly ask from you is to flat out tell me where I'm going wrong, what I can do to improve it and then I'd go away and try an updated version of the same drawing.

I've done today's one... be gentle

I think at first you should do studies (from refs) instead of working from imagination. Do value studies ignoring the details, just focus on the big shapes, then colour studies, then master studies You should build up first what folks call here "mental vocabulary". It need not take long time, it depends on your dedication. Do not overdo these first studies, IMO 30 mins at max. If you have an hour break try to do 2 of them.

Right, so to break it down:
    • Value Study first, 30 mins each picture, twice a day.
    • Colour Study, same as above.
    • Master Study, forgive my naivety, but master studies?
    • Mental Vocabulary, again, not familiar with that either =(

    Sounds good to me =)
And many thanks, always nice to have some direction.
Will report back with some fresh pictures later!
