    Brown pelican

A painting I recently completed. 30x48 inches, acrylic on canvas. Based on a photograph by the excellent Charlie Riedel.

    Thoughts?

Sadly I like it. The color contrast from blue-green to orange to almost violet is nice. I like the simpler background than the original photo. The texture of the paint on the body of the pelican is nice too. Lastly, I think the reflections at the wing tips are well handled.

My only real crit would be that it's not as...dismal looking...as the ref photo. The face of the pelican does have a sense of distress to it but the head looks very clean so it's not clear that it's covered in oil up to its eyes. Not sure what your intention was there. Still, I don't think I could paint it that well, so I'm still quite impressed.

Thanks for the comment. I guess all I was trying to do was create the same haunting feeling I had when I saw the photo. Regarding the head/body thing, I wasn't thinking about it too much but I believe it may have visually overwhelmed the work to go crazy with texture all over. Plus having that contrast gives a sense of emerging -- or trying to emerge. It's a more emotional than technical representation.

Thanks for that follow-up. I think there is definitely emotion and a sense of emerging, so your goal has been achieved!
