    ChoW 206 :: Father Time

    WRIP

    Hey ,

i want to show this charater as looking very sorrowful with a deep regret as if he has been cursed for eternity to do this job because of something awful he did a long long time ago
i thought it would be cool if he looked almost hobo like and he carried with him lots of little trinkets and and keepsakes and bits of clothing that he picked up through the centuries or even been given as gifts by people before they depart , and of course lots of time reference ,

    cheers,

    Really Awesome stuff here!
@ RichLyons, the only thing that bothers me is that the pants are so tight.
For a character with such an old looking face (though he is timeless, I guess), his pants look so.... oddly "indy", like those pants the kids wear, very very tight and female-ish...

I am aware of the 3/4 rule, don't fear!!
I thought my father time could have clock faces for eyes, and grains of sand pouring out of his hand.

Mephistoau - Really love this design, and the fact he's using a zimmer frame, great concept with the hair as a sundial type affair. Love the wrinkles too - can't wait to see it finished.

RichLyons - really love this design, all those timekeeping devices... superb. Althoguh I'd have to say that the old guys legs are very fleshed out for an old fart - not that a mystical old fart has to have old fart legs too, but It does look a bit like young man body.

glaudarien - really love the idea of the window and the drama of that image, very regal feel. Maybe the window could be a clock? I think i prefer the symmetrical images than the one with the hunched over father time.

danlambert - gorgeous lighting on this one - I can't wait to see it finished, are you going to stay black and white?

ChrisProof - really like the idea of suspension of time in this one (is that what you're going for?), as the scythe looks like its just split and is suspended along with the clocks.

Supervlieg - lovely face on this one and interesting angle - i like it.

Pixeltuner - really nice concept so far - i like the wiggly weapon and the hat is totally awesome.

sketchibo - I like this idea, especially the cogs and the skulls in the hourglass and adding coggs to the scythe. very well thought through.

invinciblewombat - (awesome name!) - really lovely sketch, time looks deep in thought. very nice.

mundi - love the style of your sketch and his sad face, looking forward to seeing where it goes.

I thought of this cool, fatherly-type old man. I'm a sucker for Neil Gaiman's Death and the fact that she's all happy and easy-going, so I thought I'd incorporate that sort of idea.

At the same time, he needs to show that he's not your average, mundane grandpa, so instead of an armchair, I'm putting him on a throne with carvings that represent the passage of time.

glaudarien, thank you!, maybe you are right... usually I always start in colour, don't know why yesterday I decided to make b&w scrap. I tried now to hide lower layer with b&w drawing.) I know that my problem usually is almost in contrast...
    Mephistoau thank you! ^^

Also I decide that it won't be bad to colour both of my sketches maybe one of them will be better. For now I feel that both of them are so-so)) (I think 2nd is better, but first contains very cute birdie))

ChileanIggy Nice concept, I really like the tats.
RichLyons Cool design, he looks strong like a superhero. I'd like to see him in Soul Calibur.

Here's my take on Father Time. He is carrying Baby New Year and keeps Death around as a sort of pet/agent. I haven't figured out where/how to add a hourglass.

RichLyons - I like what's happening so far, but the thing that bugs me is the pocket watch chains that are double looped from one side of the vest to another. That seems very very strange and unnatural - you usually have the watch sitting in a fob pocket on either the left or right side of the vest, depending on what hand you use, and then the chain extends to a button loop or belt loop. You've doubled the process. It would be incredible difficult to pull a watch as you've drawn them with the extra added "threading" of the chain through the center button holes. I think you might have been carried away with the drawing and painting of it all, but I'd recommend fixing the chains and having them either extend only from the left pocket to the right pocket, or from the center button loops to one side only...

Amedyr - be careful of the side you have the vest buttons on. The sketch at the bottom center of the roughs has the buttons as if this were a vest worn by a woman. Mens suits and vests and coats always button on the right side. You have the shirt drawn correctly, the vest just needs a little switcheroo.

Nice entries so far, pretty tricky project, well for me anyway. Not drawn many old people.
anyway, here's mine, hourglass staff and vulture companion. The branches on top of the staff represent the seasons/passing of time

    Physics lesson:
As you travel closer and closer to the speed of light your vision is twisted and warped to a cone in front of you. The light near and around the center of your vision is turned blue, as it is rapidly approaching. The light at the periphery of your vision is shifted red as it flies past you. Also all clocks, biological, mechanical and atomical tick slower and slower. They nearly stop at 99.9% light speed.

...but yea, screwin' around with some colours. probably warp the scenery around a bit....

Scrapped the developement from yesterday, went back to the thumbnails and came up with this, still roughly deciding the details and composition but i think i'm gonna start rendering tommorow and getting down to business... i hope.

    Some info:
The time on the graves counts down the time until that person will die, once it hits 12:00 father time must go and collect them to bring them to their grave, that grave will then be replaced with another to begin a new countdown. The large hourglass counts down Father Time’s death, once it has completed its cycle Father Time himself will be taken to death by his replacement - the cycle continues.

Crits tomorrow, but fuck me there's some great ideas coming through, and ARRGH!....that's one hell of a sketch man!

I'm still struggling with mine, my sense of design is awful, and so far most of what I've tried to add to the costume has been too much. I'm hoping that adding some colours will give me a few more ideas....

Also...is it just me that's waiting for Rusty to step in and blow me away!?....just me?.....:p

I got a little more done tonight, putting the character into some semblance of context. Really struggling with the moon cycle thing. I'll most likely either totally erase them and start them from scratch or just erase them and put something other kind of glyph on the wall behind him.

Business dictates that's all I can do for tonight.

I'm going for a classical feel so I can practice realism and flowy cloth. His legs look bizarre.. hopefully I can make them more realistic later on =P I think his upper body needs more movement.

Mephistoau - religious imagery intentional for sure on this end. I'm loving how adorable and wrinkly yours is. It's a really fresh view for this.

danlambert - The addition of skull in the back is pretty badass if I do say so myself.

nAniA - he's looking a bit sugary, if that makes sense? Has a very david bowie in labyrinth sort of aesthetic. (That's not a bad thing either. >>)

Here's what I've got so far. He's going so slowly.

Great stuff, all, my favorites of those I've been able to scan through are those of danlambert (very spooky!) and ARRGH! (very "alive" sketch!)

    ahoy

    heres another wip,
MadHatter will totally change the pocket watch, good call, didn't look at ref and just thought I'd wing it... my bad.

Going to stick with the skinny Indy jeans, was trying for a Japanese fighting game type look, so I wanted him to be strong and sexy, dressed in mod clothes...But old and wise..
    Anyway pretty close to finished...
