    cg. ive been having fun painting the clouds and sky lately. its nice because you can't wait too long as they are constantly moving, but with the digital its possible to capture lots of information quickly. these are mostly done with a custom scatter brush and with an ordinary soft brush, about 30-60 minutes eachs

    Hello Andrew,

    Some very cool and imaginative stuff in here, and the studies seem to be going well. I didn't look through your whole book, but the finished drawings back on page 6 are awesome. It's almost hard to believe all this was drawn by the same person, though I suspect the varying time inputs account for that. May I ask why you are venturing into digital?

    Some basic form lighting studies wouldn't be a bad idea—this one is nice, but I'm not convinced you have the hang of it yet. And with your drawings, maybe try to play with line quality a bit—use lines that change thickness to help show the form and things like that. Good stuff, keep it up. *thumbs-up

    Hello Mr Corlan, thanks a lot for your thoughtful message, it's given me something to think about.

    Yes, the varying time inputs have a lot to do with it. Some of the personal pieces (like the drawings you mentioned on page 6) were worked on slowly over periods of a few months, and this summer I've been working mostly on a drawing that I've been working in, on and off, for a year now.

    I've almost tricked myself into realising that if I put enough time and effort into anything, I can get bits of my soul in there somehow and it'll be a great piece. I haven't really tried doing this seriously with life studies, I'm not sure why. I do need to practice more lighting. I just finished the Light and Form class at TAD (I took it part-time) and I learnt a lot about light and form while there. I haven't posted any of the work I did there.

    Yes.. I'll wrestle out some life/light/form studies with the same dedication as if they were these longer imaginative pieces
    *why didn't I see the value of that before?*


    I'm venturing into digital I'm attracted to all the different ways it can be used (and the speed/ flexibility). It still feels very alien to me. I'll be very happy when I'm able to use digital media with the same fluency I feel with my ink pen. Which I realise is a long way off seeing as the ink pen is so simple it's almost binary, whereas the digital realm is almost the opposite.


    I see what you mean about it seeming strange that it all comes from the same person, I do feel very split.

    I plan on pushing the last black and white skull/flower piece to finish.

    i also realised my monitor has a "rotate" function so I can turn it 90 degrees to either side. perfect for drawing figures. the image of the athlete on the screen is a still-photo, nothing to do with the 2012 olympics

    Doing these bridgman studies with much more awareness to trying to grasp the function and shape of the legs as a whole and relating the whole to its parts, I realise my bridgman arm studies in 2010 weren't so much focused on the individual muscles and more on just trying to ingrain the general arm-shape into my mind by rote (not so successful).

    The Untitled Face III pic is one of my favourites and was born out of many many hours of devoted drawing.
    There is another of those in the works...


    in the meanwhile, olives. I'm doing just about one of these still life paintings a day, and they usually take around 2h and theyre helping a lot.

    sombertwin: very true, its true of anything in life and in the arts. its not just the time but the quality and focus of the practice (which is basically the key i believe), in 2010 I spent a long time doing studies but i wasn't going about it in a very intelligent way and i dont think i learnt as much as i could have given the time i spent on it.

    eclipse-se: haha the table is just a big plank of wood i bought cheaply at one of these tool stores, and its resting on two identical cheapy ikea draws. the drawing table ive realised is essential if you want to draw for any length of time without harming your neck. this one cost 100€ and is an A1 size model.

    ill keep myself up to date on you guys's sketchbooks..

    empty glass still life i started but didn't get very far on due to how time consuming it was to get the many different ellipses right (they are still off).

    yikes, accidentally moved both my light and my glass, the lines are so specific on that so I don't think I'll continue it..

    I spent many hours on this yesterday, and still couldn't quite get a grasp on it, so this is also still a work in progress, I'll give it some more time later today

    I got a copy of Imagine FX's "How to Draw Anatomy vol.2" in the post yesterday, so I'm looking forward to working with that and showing some improvement in my figures over the coming weeks.

    Am thinking of stepping up my still-life practice into real paints soon too.

    Tef Thanks! I don't actually use the big screen as much as I could, such a big screen is a strain on the eyes sometimes.

    Very hard. Been working on this for a few days now, about 4-6h.
    Am starting to get the perspective right, using lots of warp tool and the straight-lasso.
    I've had this chess-set for ages and I love it.
