    thanks to you both

these days ive been working on one of my bigger project drawings, so i dont have much smaller stuff to post. i have a big A3 ink drawing that I started in 2009 that I've found time and space to work on again. Really excited about it!

Here's some alchemy bits and bobs I've been doing in the mean time..

in2eternity thanks (: i might be selling postcard prints on the street sometime in the future, an idea i had, thanks for stopping by

    ----

ayyy i don't have a scanner or camera here so I can't post the stuff I've been doing lately. I'm a bit bummed that my sb has sort of died out now, but what can ya do.

I did a little cg paint the other day that turned out better than any of my previous attempts. I felt like i learnt a bit more of the basics of how cg painting can work. This is just from two base colours, and blending to make new ones. Following Kecleons tutorial http://stuff.veekun.com/pkcolor/

Hey! I think the variety of anatomy study is going to pay of, keep at it! Post some more!! I'm guessing you have opacity turned on when you painted your last painting? Maybe you could try starting off without opacity jitter and at 100%? I find that it works for getting down basic values and colours but I guess it's just preference, I'm still a rookie!
    Keep up the goodness!

no, i set the opacity manually to different levels throughout the painting. i used a normal brush and just changed the opacity with the number keys on the keyboard to blend the colours how i wanted

and i actually did start off with opactiy at 100% to get down the values, i found that useful too

im a total rookien00b also, youre advice is totally welcome

i havnt touched anatomy studies since febuary! ive just been experimenting and playing around everyday...

chmong dude work on your laziness, it doesnt take anything to open up that sketchbook at least once a day! maybe you feel stuck with whatever kinda thing youre doing and need to try something new. i got some awesome "pentel" colour brush ink pens and theyre awesome, lots of fun..

    yep, i agree..
ive been travelling these past weeks! I hitchiked down from edinburgh all the way to spain, and spent some time in france... ive been drawing a bit, working a lot on a little ink piece, can't post it here yet. got no scanner...

back here in edinburgh i have no scanner so i guess its a good opportunity to try and dig into some cg stuffs

coincidental that you posted here ivan, i just got back yesterday,
and i watched that film you recommended me, "making the connection", it was very interesting and quite inspiring. ive been vegan for a few weeks now actually, going great so far
    hope youre well

something ive been working on this month, finally finished it today!

    Name: tree.jpg

it's very small, the size of a postcard. I'm going to print some out and sell them during the festival here in edinburgh. I've planned a series of 4, so I have 3 more of them to make, but a stupidly small amount of time to do them. will be a challenge

done with 0.05 ink pens (Staedtler pigment liner whoo)
it felt like doing pixel art on paper. it was done just using dots, no lines

    and a close up:

That last one is beautiful. I saw in the Crit Center but didn't feel it needed critique.
Besides the impressive technique and the time it must have taken the pointillistic result has something celestial about it that works well with the subject. Nice job!

ua! I think I saw art of yours in IMGFX or one of those mags, last month, could it be? I remember thinking it was awesome, and trying to remember the weebly url (which I actually forgot). But I just saw some of the pictures on your website through the link in your sig and was reminded.
in any case, that's an awesome co-incidence that you had already actually posted something on my sb, and seen my work.

thanks for the comment, that means a lot.

I've finished the piece now, here is the final version:

it's on an A6 piece of paper (the size of a postcard)
I have another ink-dot piece, in the same format, in progress. I'll see if I can upload a pic tomorrow. my general feeling with these personal/long-time-in-progress-works is not to show them before they're finished, but I feel now that it would actually probably benefit me a lot.

this sketchbook had basically been all about getting me to practice daily observational drawing, but i figure it would be good also to post my personal ink drawings in here too. so i'll go ahead with that.. and any other things i've done while away:

    ~ 2012 ~

Growing Out Of It - Untitled Face III

    Name: ufiii_wip.jpg
Views: 974
Size: 431.3 KB

    a late hello to 2012

this year was quite a strange one for me artistically. last year i did almost nothing but studies and experiment, this year i spent almost the entire time working on a few individual pieces, and i only finished two of them.

i often struggle with getting stuck in a mind-set of trying to force myself to finish old artwork which showed much potential but for which i've lost all interest in working on. and i limit myself from starting new projects under the pretense of not wanting to start something before i finish what i have already started, or not having too much on my hands. my unwillingness to let go of unfinished pieces and give myself the room to explore fresh energy is perhaps one of the largest weaknesses of mine i can see right now.

my artistic resolution for 2012 is to learn digital painting, and to concentrate my energies on learning the visual art foundations.

thanks again to everyone who has commented on my sketchbook

time to shut up now and draw

Its true what they say, your artwork is outta this world! Loved post #166 and #160.. I can't imagine how long it must take you to finish such an insanely detailed piece.. I admire your patience sir.
I don't have any critique to offer as I'm still nowhere your level, but I hope to see more work here this year.. Happy 2012!

    Hello! I'm trying to improve my artwork and I really could use your critique - S k e t c h b o o k

gosh, so many big detailed pictures, even if I have no idea what's going on there. But they have an unique feeling =)
And I like that little mushroom painting you did. Colours are great! the last drawing in #163 is amazing too. Like all the flowing stuff in your work, makes it interesting to look at.

this took about an hour. need to practice this so much more
its really quite fun. i had to use photoshop's "liquify" (Cmd+Shift+x) to get the proportions right a little better at the end.

    Heyya, howzitgoin?

You have made some good improvement over this sketchbook, good job sir!

I saw that you were asking for some advice for your painting in one of your last posts, so I thought I might do a quick paintover.

Your sketch has some good composition, the main problem that you were having was with creating depth.

Basically, in most paintings, depth is created by fading the far background out to a lighter shade, and making the foreground much darker.
This is an exaggeration of what happens in real life when water particles in the air fade out things at a distance.

Detail in a painting should also follow this rule. Up close and in focus detail should be high, far away, it should be faded and obscured.

Also you might do well to practice blending some more,
that can be done with either a hard or a soft brush with pressure opacity.

    I hope this is helpful!

Thanks for the stop by my Sketchbook!
