Thanks for stopping by my SB and for the advice ^^

Inspirational stuff here! I love your approach to simplifying the skull. I may try that. Your environments are killer! I just love how organic your work feels. Really cool

its been so long, sketchbook ~.
god it feels good to be back on here. and "give thanks" is back, yay.
do any of you struggle with this tension between starting new work and sticking it out and finishing old work?
i get the impression some people struggle with becoming addicted to the rush that you get from starting something fresh and new, and have a hard time sticking to a single piece or project for long enough to finish it before going to the next thing, i think on the other side of that there's not letting yourself start new projects until you've finished off the ones you've already started, i'm usually on the 2nd side of that tension, and am experiencing a pretty heavy dose of it now, where i decided to take out some old pieces that i'd let go of and try and finish them off. and they take hours and days.. i think they'll be good to see finished but they're not my "edge" anymore and all the hours i spend doing them could be spent working on the pieces that REALLY matter and get me fired up. sometimes you gotta let go though. i just wish i wasn't so slow sometimes. there are 3 pieces i have which i REALLY want to get done, and i'm slowly chipping away at them but freelance work + studies + finishing off these old pieces are taking up that time. i'd have thought that after ranting about this i'd feel clearer about just diving into the ones i really want to do but right now i actually really feel like finishing off the monster pic. this is the one i'm doing right now:

eclip-se: good to hear you're meditating, let me know how that goes! I've heard of that person before, personally his work isn't my thing at all but let me know how it goes for you.
stonec: its leaf dudess : ) but thanks. and yeh, selfportraits are good practice, i'll do some more
    minella: thanks minella
rabdi: yeh, edge is something i'm starting to pay more and more attention to, thanks for pointing that out. i wish i got more crits like these, i barely ever get crits, moaning etc
niquey: thanks! haha i didn't even know i have any environments in here. need to do more of that. blegh. thanks for your kind words
afklamer: thanks! more of that where that came from...

and a few bits and bobs maybe worth posting:

so, another 30min still life practice.
this looks plasticky because its a plastic lamp
and it might look miniature or toyish but thats because its a miniature lamp (less than 10cm tall)

Psychedelic! That owl is freaky cool 8)

That miniature lamp actually does look miniature! Nice work. I feel the perspective is kinda off in the base of it, but that could just be a result of the rough nature of it. Keep the studies coming!

thanks niquey! yeh i think the base is off too, but i gave myself a 30m timelimit and could have gone on tweaking forever. thanks for pointing it out though.

heres to hoping people start pointing out all the flaws in everything i post. i mean it! i want to know what i'm missing.

    more progress on this.
-values need tons of work (mainly darkening form)
-then some more interesting texturing and edging on the forms
-some cast shadows need to be thrown
    -background will be interestingified

idk if my values are incredible, lots of slow work on this, but i'm definitely paying more attention to values and to really produce a sense of form and balancing out the lights and darks and various mids

Wow, that last drawing looks like a ton of work! Sadly I can't give much critique, I'm so bad at values myself XD But I try anyway.
First, I wonder if a bit more contrast in the focal point is possible. It seems a bit like you avoid to have highlights and darkest darks next to each other. But you can use it to get depth and contrast. Especially if you have to many tiny details. GEtting into some serious cast shadows might not be bad either. And hard edges. I'm not good at telling at how and where to use this stuff - I just notice that these points went a bit missing.

    Hi again CA.
Here's to hoping to keep this thing going intermittently. Going to post a few of the studies I've been doing over the past few weeks.
Julia: thanks for the advice, that's all good. I should have done all of that and more with the picture, the next one will turn out better.

    I....I think...I love you...

jk jk. This work, though, is just such a scrumptious feast for the eyes. I can't stop staring. It's work like this that make me want to get up and go draw something. Sorry I can't give any helpful critiques. I'm busy scraping my jaw off the floor. Keep up the awesome!

Gah-damn @ the red sword guy at the top of your last post. Some nice reflections on his belly, and nice texture and details overall. Nice plating. Lots to look at. Would make a good 3D model. As an illustration vs. a piece of concept art, it might look better if the lighting was more dramatic, and certain large areas of him were in shadow and certain areas were in brighter, more obvious light. But that stuff isn't my forte. Dunno if my point is coming across. Anyway, it's still really cool, looks pro. ^5

So I moved to Edinburgh. If any of you live here, lets meet up and paint!!!
I keep saying I will update this thing more frequently, urgh. I don't have a scanner anymore, and in the past 3 months Ive been focusing so much on these 4 large pieces that I don't want to show anything but snippets of, so I've been neglecting sketching and studying.

Since getting here I've been getting back into that, but its not really worth photographing. But heres some bits and bobs I've been accumulating recently.
