gamersgene: Unfortunately it's been a while since I've done a fully rendered figure, putting off on my studies, although I've just been inspired to get back to figure drawing, although it probably won't be popping out studies from my anatomical books.

ArghosRo: Checked the sketchbook, good stuff man. Although if that horn on your mask gave you trouble and you want precision, mess around with the pen tool, it does perfect curves, ellipses, circle, and other things.

LAL: I wouldn't say rich imagination. Although I've just been inspired to work towards rendering from my imagination and scratch 'cause I've been tired of limiting myself to reference and building around a single image. Going to start perspective studies as that seems to be the foundation of rendering from the imagination.

    Anyway, thanks guys!

Quick self portrait, stayed up for five hours making this from midnight to morning . Got inspired by people actually going through with that self portrait a day challenge.

I've also been going through The Complete Guide to Perspective by John Raynes, I'm taking some of the exercises and replicating pictures in different viewpoints.

    jskotte: Thanks man, I will.

Exon-Ion: Haha, it's not often that I have those bursts of energy, most of the time I'm not doing much.

dandylion: Yep, in the book I used, it supplied plan (top-down) and elevation (profile) views.

Been motivated by all the imagination sketches everyone's been doing and being tired of just copying. I've been doing some studies from Burne Hogarth and Gary Faigin's Guide to Facial Expression, too lazy to upload them though since most of it was in pencil and my scanner blows. Guess I'll just show the results of them in some of my imagination drawings/paintings and my sculpture.

Copied an illustration from Star Wars Cross Sections and then did some turnarounds from the imagination. Everything else from that was from my head.

Self portrait, study of a portrait by Craig Mullins (who's style of painting I've been trying to emulate recently), two more self portraits, and an attempt at landscapes, I don't know who the original artist is though, I think it was from a EOW competition. With the first three I've been trying to create interest in a piece without going into meticulous detail, the way painters like Craig Mullins do in a relatively short period of time. The last self portrait I was inspired to go for photorealism but decided just to get the airbrushy look. Last one I'm just trying to get over my fear of things that super textural like landscapes.

    - Self portrait from life and my attempt at pastels, didn't get the look I was initially going for but I like it.
    - Self portraits/Studies from life of the expression of anger, angle relationships, and perspective in the face.
    - An assortment of sketches from life. I've done a ton of these, so I'll just show the ones that turned out the best. These were all done in school, during lunch, study hall, and art class.

Finally to decided to start upload more art, because the uploader here blows and I just got photobucket.

These are freakin' ancient, from October last year, I've just been to lazy to upload. They're from a figure drawing marathon I went too at Lafayette College, I really wish I could find more of these in my area.

Life sketches from school, I do these pretty much everyday during study hall and lunch, so I'm just going to upload the more recent ones since I have stacks of these.

The first couple are pretty old. The first two were drawn from multiple people, since they kept moving around, I really should try to do that sort of thing more often, most of my complete life drawings are from people who stand pretty still.

The first two were from an art show in December, a bit before christmas. They were having artist demos from the students and I volunteered for them. I got into the zone, doing these sometimes in like 15 minutes, despite that no one stood still. I had a ton of warming to do before that though. I into a rush with the first couple, forgetting to take pictures before handing them to the sitters.

For shits and giggles, this was supposed to be a actual legit study of the torso, it was actually pretty accurate at first then I showed to one of my friends in homeroom and we started mutilating it, lol.

Sculpture I'm working right now, going to have to start all over due to problems like the armature popping out and the legs being to short despite the fact I've extended them as far as I can.

    @ Kendall

Haha, it's not much, I really need to get in the habit of bringing pieces like that one to a finish, and sadly that's most detail I've done in an original work. I just keep leaping from one to another. But thanks anyway. I'm gonna stick it out with the sculpture though and try and break that habit.

Attempt at an illustration from scratch. One of my classmates wanted me to make a band logo, but it ended up more like a promo poster, and the guy had no idea what he wanted and his band had no idea what it was doing so the opportunity to get my art out there slid away unfortunately. It did take me out of my comfort zone though, shooting photos of friends for reference and going out to an abandoned warehouse, unfortunately I couldn't get inside the actual interior of it, so the least I could do was make a quick wireframe in sketchup to get the perspective right. It made me realize that half the work of illustration is doing your research and going out of your way for good reference.

Still life of a jar, I'm pretty happy with the top portion, although the bottom portion and the cast shadow could use work.

dude your work is very solid. you will see instant improvement if you will just make sure that you are creating distinct edge variety. hard, soft, and lost edges compose a picture.

the whole picture doesnt need to be perfect but if you can focus on the place you want to draw the most attention and seperate you different edge types you will instantly increase the emotiveness of your work.

right now some of it seems to indistinct or blurry.

proper edge types takes commitment to the piece.

Wow, you have a lot of really nice updates! It's great that you practice a wide variety of subjects, keep up the good work! On your sketches, try practicing using as few lines as possible - try to capture the form and gesture with a few quick strokes, and then define and add more detail if you have more time. I only say this because your sketches tend to be a little messy and are sometimes really hard to read, and sometimes appear a little too angular or stiff. Besides that, you're doing really well! Keep posting!

Aryh - Thanks for popping in my sketchbook man. I can see where you're coming from with the edges. I'll definitely work on edges, they can be hard to control in acrylic though, although using extender mediums will help with that.

Tuesday - Thanks for the crit. I'll have no problem with that, since, during lunch when I normally do life sketching, people sometimes are moving every 5 seconds (30 secs on posemaniacs doesn't seem so hard now). And I generally prefer not to erase in pure line drawings since I feel it adds energy to let all the preliminary marks show through, but I can still see how you feel it's messy. And guess I do draw with too many straight lines, some of my figures are starting to look literally blocky now that you point it out.

Anyway, I really feel like I've stagnated lately and have been making next to no improvement, and I still haven't topped those charcoal and pastel self portraits I did . I can't wait for summer and next year, since I'm only gonna have 2 academic classes and 4 study halls, so more time for my art . I really wish I had more time right now. It's a pain balancing art class assignments, studying life and anatomy, along with wanting to illustrate while dealing with academics. It's probably just that I'm lazy, since kids like Miles still banged stuff out in high school.

Apple still life in acrylic, managed to do it almost entirely in transparent glazes, maybe I'll try glazing color over it.

Experimenting with focusing on construction/optical drawing and focusing on action and pose. Construction, focusing drawing form in perspective vs looking at 2d shapes is working like a charm, my hands look infinitely better now.
