I'd been avoiding Photoshop for a while ever since I bought my leadholder () and since I made that damned upgrade to CS5. I've since had to revert back to CS3, so I can use my tablet again without wanting to rip out my hair.

The 3 months between posts shows a nice leap of improvement - your newer work definitely has more personality and a more solid foundation
    Happy sketching!

Hey, I like your portraits, and the hair variety is cool too. I can see your practicing structure/construction which is good. It'll help you in understanding form in a three dimensional way, if that makes any sense. You also seem to elongate your figures a bit but that may be due to personal style. Anyway, I hope you'll keep drawing and posting.

It's very interesting watching your progress through your sketchbook, and I can see over time you're getting a much greater understanding of facial anatomy. Particularly in your latest self portrait and second image in post #43.

I do feel you could use with some focus on contrast and colour combinations. I think some darker values can really give more definition to your characters and give them some proper depth. Also, I think you should mess around a bit more with the kind of colours you use for the skin tone. At the moment, it looks like you use one particular colour to shade, and one particular colour to highlight certain areas, when really you could be using a plethora of gradients to further define them. There is a colour theory thread in the fine arts section which I find pretty useful at times (even if it is just to scroll through). I also suggest injecting a bit more red in the skin tones (i find darker reds particularly good for darker skin tones) so they look a bit more life like.

I think doing some photo studies and the like would help you better understand what I mean ( as well as give great anatomic information as well!)

Hope this helps you reach your goals!

    Update

So...yea. I'm finally updating after a huge time away. I graduated last year, and that final semester kicked my ass with back to back research papers and the inevitable realization that a B.A in English was really only going to lead in one direction. Anyway, I stopped drawing for a couple of months and found out the hard way that drawing really isn't like riding a bike. It felt like I had to relearn everything from square one. I tested out a few new programs, but Photoshop is what I'm most comfortable using. Quick Early and Mid-2012 compilation:

That last one was an experiment/test sketch of the Monoprice 10x6 tablet's performance. (My initial thoughts on the tablet here)
