    Ideas for weekly challenge?

What do you guys think the newest weekly challenge should be like?

Personally I'd like to see a variety of topics covered such as logos, package designs, posters, etc... what do ya'll think?

Also: I talked to Jason and he mentioned that there may be prizes in the form of downloads/discovery passes for the first challenge so GET PUMPED

    Hey Liffey,

I was thinking of a rotational system rather than a classic one, meaning we could have 2 or 3 main categories and rotate them so we can cover more areas.
    For example, we could have:
    week 1 - logo design
    week 2 - poster design
    week 3 - packaging design
week 4 - here we could have something like a hybrid theme - GD in illustration / GD in concept art. Where you would have to design a character or an illustration while integrating graphic design elements. Cross-matching the areas would do great good i think.

Nice and cool schedule proposed by Sickbrush.

Really it will be good to have logo design in a week and then poster design, packaging design and so on. We can add animations (non-nude) as well

I got bored and had an idea for a new CA logo. So I made a rough sketch.

That's a great idea Sickbrush, I was thinking similarly. We could even throw in another oddball challenge once in a while such as typography or album cover, just for fun.

Whatever we do, it must force the issue of GD over pure illustration only. For example, all pieces must be "printed" (look as if they were) with all the info necessary included, not just a nice painting with the comment that "I'll put the title roughly here or there in some nice font..."

I could see any of these suggestions being restricted to a specific audience age, or a particular venue (for example, a book cover aimed at pre-teens, or a poster aimed at one of the classical performing arts like ballet or opera). This would be good practice in learning how to work within limited parameters, which is pretty much what real life communication is.

And, adding to sickbrushe's first three suggestions...

    Book cover
    Wrapped Book Jacket
School Products like folders and cases aimed at various ages
    Billboards
    Newspaper add
    Product add for magazine
    Album and CD package
    Toy packaging
Promotional items like those given out at a convention
Career guidance project (Become an artist, become an Astronaut, etc.)

    ...and for extended projects...

A complete corporate ID or Brand presentation
A graphic treatment for a large public building or even an entire small city (directional and ID signs, publicity literature, How-to-find... aids, etc.)
A branding, promotional and informational package to support an historic site
Some sort of branding/promo project for an entirely new food client/new food product
Event posters for a project that includes many areas of interest over a longish period of time, like a giant festival (art, food, music, performers, photography, etc.)

I have some ideas about ideas. These would all encourage illustration.
    -Zombie boxing match poster
    -Grind House movie poster
    -Spy Novel
    -The Headline of Doom!
    -Snake Oil
    -Propaganda

Great points, Ilaekae. There will definitely need to be some thourough resource gathered for each project since many people might not be familiar with the correct format and whatnot. As for the extended projects, it might be fun if at some point in the future there were coordinated theme for all weekly activities... design the character, their homeworld, their pet, a storyboard, and then some sort of promotional material or in-story logo. Have it be a 4 week project or something. Maybe!

Hey people, I really think we should create a challenge based on typography. This could be just one of a few challenges.

I've actually just finished a short graphic design course at university and I found one of the assessment pieces very enjoyable and potentially suitable for some kind of challenge. It was called the "visual sentence" and it went something like this....

...Students will produce 2D visual responses to given stimuli... The visual form should communicate the student's interpretation of and/or emotional response to the stimulus using basic design elements (line, shape, colour & typography). Compositions should demonstrate an understanding of graphic design principles and how these contribute to the visual communication of a message. Link

Basically, the stimulus is a phrase or sentence, picked at random from a book/magazine/song/print using some kind of random method. Like it says, only line, shape, colour and typography may be used, which means absolutely no imagery (facial expressions, hand gestures, human figures, animals, vehicles, etc!). A simple exercise like a visual sentence can range from being a portal for the beginner to an enjoyable exercise for the professional. I think it would be little bit stupid to have a graphic design forum without a typography based challenge...

    Hello Ilaekae,

I absolutely agree on everything you said. We could start building a structure for these so we can have a clear view of what we want to happen with the weekly activities.

Jason said we could write him an email concerning the weekly activities and what we would like to see in them so let's try to organize these ideas and structure them thoroughly, describing work methods and whatnot. Also, a few themes for the first weekly activities would be nice to hand him too.

I'll try organizing these points that we have all issued here and turn them into a palpable structure that we can later on modify or improve.

Keep in touch, let's make this section work, peeps! Thanks for all the positive and creative ideas you guys are throwing into this place.

Sounds good. I had mentioned to him that redesigning the CA/OBM logo might be a good first challenge and he said that would be fine. Up to you guys whether you want to do that.

That looks good to me. We could add more things to that list of catagories of course, such as typography. I'm sure there are people out there who would love guidance on creating a workable font.

As for the themes, I think we should lean towards stuff a concept art board could get behind. I'm not sure that a museum brochure will fill many people here with enthusiasm. Now if we specified that it were a museum on another planet, or an underwater museum, that might be a different story. Obviously its up to everyone who participates how far they want to go with that.

Agree on the type, agree on the concept related.

I'm going to spend my time coming up with thematic possibilities that can be done in any of the GD areas we noted. Will a few hundred do for now? Heeheehee...

Here's a start. I concentrated on the most universal term, assuming that something like "mining" would automatically include the possibilities of any of the following: Corp ID, Logo, worker uniform design, packaging and shipping containers, transportation markings, ident badges, advertising materials, retail outlet branding, and of course, for all possibilities--human, other species, space, planet-bound, urban, village, mobile, post-apocolyptic, etc.

    Street vendors/carts (Corporate franchise)
    Clinic
    Complete meal package design (multi-species)
Flags for neighborhoods divided by species to promote unity overall
    Fashions for mermaids/aquatic life
    Fashions for Flying Species
    Inter-planetary buses
    Cab service (all types)
    Emergency Service and warning system
    Police Department
    Military recruiting
    Mining
    Hotel/Motel/Rooming in space or inter-planetary
    Produce Branding
    Architectural Murals and decoration
    Pharmacy and pharmacy products
    Performing arts
"Duck and kiss your ass" info sheets and such
    Numerals (inter-species)
Universal alphabet/symbol system based on phonetic pronunciation
    Basic food-stuff wrappers
    Sports tickets
    Sports uniforms
    Art exhibit poster
Classic literature book covers adapted to other cultures/species
    Political Campaign
    Tourist advertising
Disaster equipment of various types with self explanatory direction as part of design
    Electronic Communications ID
    Tee-Shirt designs (various species)
    Religious building decoration
    Farm fair/market
Flea-market or "Find Junk you Need" event
    Entertainment festival
    Personal Identification Badges/Cards
Various levels of Restaurant menus/signage (Posh to Fast Food)
    Fashion ads (inter-species)
Portable storage devices (ID and content marking, etc.)
    Space packaging for weightless environments
Comic book-style teaching aids for very young
    Revolutionary posters, flags and literature
    Fantasy Escape Suppliers
    Environmental Awareness (all possibilities)
    Universal Emergency Vehicle/Ship markings
Publicity posters, etc., for Movies/Plays converted to non-human audience and vice versa (maybe badly, like bad Chinese chop-sucky stuff)
    Mail/Delivery services
    Charities and Pseudo-governmental aid agencies
    Candy and other snacks
Design Suggestions for indigenous people to use for export products to "foreign" markets
    Newspaper
    Export Branding
Retail store (simple to massive corporate)
    Money
    Coins
    Postage Stamps
    Visas
    License "Plates"
Camouflage patterns for military and hunting
Back-to-Nature groups for young (like boy scouts and girl scouts)
    Military rank insignia
Items for games of chance (cards/dice/etc.)
Heraldry and items of Royal Ranking
Illustrate a quote with only Type/Numerals
Symbols for various levels of civilization that aren't patronizing
Patterns/decoration for sleeping materials and privacy curtains of various types
Suggestions for "personalizing" prefab dwellings, external or internal
Personal vehicle Corporate ID (like Ford/Honda symbols)
    Dancing/Acting/Circus school promotion
    "Gang" symbols and tattoos
    Holiday/Holy Day ornaments, etc.
Haunted house/scarey amusement like at a carnival
Temporary ceremonial "vestments" of rank for government/religious/military types (like Catholic priest's outer garment or judges robes, etc.)
    Merit badges or awards
    Scholastic Diplomas
    Pet Kennels
    Zoo
    Trash Removal Items/Publicity
Sexual Orientation Symbols (this will obviously include species that involve more than two "partners" to pro-create)
    Pre-packeaged Beverages and dispensers
Universal temperature/radiation/atmospheric gas detectors (badges or chest/arm mounted plates)
"Creation" Book and sample pages (like bible...and other species)
Status markings to denote age/mating possibility/etc.
    Tool packaging
Covers for "permanent record" books like journals, sketchbooks, diaries, etc.
Web Design for various reasons (personal/corporate/info/retail/etc.)

De-motivational posters have always been fun :-P
Also we could do strict color jobs where everyone has to use the same color scheme or each entrant gets assigned a color for a said challenge.

We need to make sure that the briefs are very thorough with the details like size, audience, preferred colors, the whole shebang.

    I love the rotation idea.

I was hoping the challenges would combine illustration and GD. I'm up for any challenge, but I'd like to have fun and incorporate top notch illustration.

Not to get off subject, but what about game interface. I've always wanted to learn how I could get involved with that.

By game interface I assume you mean in game menus and such? That might be possible, although I think that really has as much to do with interactive design. We could definitely do video game manuals though.

Raoul, considering the high number of "illustrators" here, every single project is probably going to have an illustration of some kind. Otherwise we'd have a riot.

Of course, those who don't follow the GD ground rules as well as the illustration rules will have their balls ground into Sumi ink...

I think you should add a challenge along the lines of re-design, as it is a common area in professional graphic design to repackage brands in a new light.

Take a logo/package/movie poster/marketing brand and redesign them in your own take or in a specific theme. Would love to see other ppls take on the concept art forum logo.

I'm guessing the proper protocol is to write up an announcement and explanation with some idea of what to expect and such in the lounge. Decide who your mods will be, post a reference back to this thread, and let it float for a while to see what reaction you get, and any suggestions on time frame, etc.

I'd post the same thing in THIS thread, AND in the lounge, so as many people see it as possible--builds interest and excitement.

Then check with Davi with a nice note well in advance with details and request to have a new Challenge area set up in the Community area where the COW, POW!, etc., are located. (I'm guessing this is where the challenge should go for max exposure, or maybe you could isolate it here if you wanted...)

I hope that the challenges begin soon, i like the idea of "re-desing" a new logo for CA.

..Also I think that it would be an interesting idea if we make logos/posters/whaever... Using/imagin stuff for fantasy companies like: "Clone's Lab from the future", "android related industries", "Travels to Mars", etc..
