    Finding other artists nearby

    Hey all,

I posted something similar in the art schools forum, but I think I'll get a better general response here.

Does anyone have any experience finding other artists relatively nearby, preferably with similar goals, (concept art vs fine art) similar age group, etc? I'm thinking about quitting my state college art program to focus on concept art on my own. I haven't met a ton of people (artists) yet, but would be transferring to a new place in the fall where I think I would. I don't want to miss out on the experience of hanging out with other artists, but that is most of what I would still be going to school for if I chose that route... CA and the internet offer me a lot of that, but face to face is kind of a different beast.

So far a good suggestion was just go sketching places. This is great, but my immediate area is suburbs, so mostly older families and such. Should I go sketch down near the colleges, even if I'm not going there? Sketchgroups come to mind, but I have no idea where to start.

Any thoughts or ideas would be awesome. Thanks!

ConceptArt.org 4.0 will have technology that will help with that.

I can't really help with this problem immediately, just throwing this out there to show that something is coming to this site that could help in the future.

Don't know if you checked here but there may be a group near you. Or you could start one if there isn't

When I moved from California to Virginia I found Craigslist really helpful. A lot of groups and artists use it to post local info or to find local info on life drawing sessions or art groups, so you may give that a try.

Thanks Flakari Leader, Zapp! and dpaint! You rock.

I'll keep an eye out for ca 4.0 I have indeed checked the sketchgroup thread, craigslist and meetup.com. I haven't found much as of yet except for one old, stale post in the sketchgroup thread. I suppose that may mean that there's a need for one to be created. It would be interesting to make a posting in one of the three and see what sort of response there is. I sort of assumed because there were no posts, the community wasn't there.

Try using meetup.com, it's a great resource for groups!

Yep, just because no one has posted there yet doesn't mean that there aren't people waiting for someone else to make one. There's no harm in trying anyway.

Ok, I've just done a bunch more digging. It seems like several people have been like me over the years. There is a decent fine art community here (denver), but it seems concept artists are kind of sparse.

I'll try the meetup sites and see if there's any response, but it seems as if school/classes are the best option. Perhaps I could continue just taking a figure drawing class or two and see who I meet.

Other than that, it seems I have little choice but moving. I guess that's what the internet is for though, right?

    Any other ideas still welcome.

I've made calls. That's the only way I'm able to genuinely vouch for this site for now.
