    I recently purchased a 2tb external HDD...

...it's pretty sick. I named it AZATHOTH.

First one to 2tb of music wins!

I beat you there like a year ago...

But then my hard drive died and now I'm up to about a TB. But that's excluding anything I own physically...

Azathoth was one of my band name ideas, by the way... SO don't say it's yours now.

I'm wanting an external drive to backup on, did you mean partitioning, Randis or just having 2 sets of drives to backup to simultaneously?

I got a 1TB iomega external HD a couple years ago and within a year, it began failing on me. It wouldn't mount properly on some occasions but the real kicker was when I started pulling data off from it only to discover that it had been damaged.

If any of you guys have a particular brand and model that you swear by, I'd love to know.

Yeah, well I got one of these puppies parked outside, so nyah nyah, nyah-nyah nyah!

    I recently purchased a 2tb external HDD...

    THREE PETABYTES. In...your...face!

Best of all, the cooling system doubles as a hot water heater, so it's like a $560,000 teakettle replacement...

Thanks for being a proud beta tester

Also, partition partition partition. Nothing like a slow drive taking a very long time to defrag/scan because it's going through 2tb of data.

I've been wanting to pick up an external hard drive; but I was told it's one of those things where you have to buy something you a respectable warranty on it because they're actually more prone to failing than one might realize. I'm all nervous now.

You guys are mean. All I ever hear about is how's it's going to explode. :/ Though I've had a 320 gb from the same brand for about 2 years and I've never had a problem.

Oh, and Jake, Azathoth is a Lovecraftian invention. Fail.

It's actually the name of an ancient demon, I believe, so it's a Christian invention. Either way, there's nothing wrong with borrowing names from mythology/literature...

You're thinking of Azazel. It's been speculated that Lovecraft conceived the name from Azazel and Anathoth, Jeremiah's home town, but no one knows for sure. What is known, though, is that Lovecraft definitely invented it.

Well all hard drives fail at some point. If you do a thorough check you'll know if it's likely to die sooner or later. I generally give them 2 years still I start shopping again.

Don't feel bad about my "Beta testing comment" I just "Beta tested" iOS4 for my iPod touch and regretted it. Apple's support forums are to erase posts they don't agree with or gives them bad press *thumbs up*

What's the name of the company, if you don't mind me asking?

Does anyone have experience with the Fantom 2TB drives?

It's Western Digital. I've been very satisfied with my 320. I don't really do much in the way of massive data transfer so the relatively low speed doesn't bother me too much.

2 sets of course. Partitions would not help much if the drive is broken and can not be accessed.
Happens all the time... External drives are dropped or kicked by accident... power failures and so on...

I had a 1 TB Western Digital hard drive that broke/crashed and I lost all of my data... Now I use a different make (that I can't remember) and I don't think I'll ever use WD again.

Hey FourTonMantis I bet it's not exactly 2tb But how much space does the preloaded software take up from a hard drive that big? I have a 1tb FANTOM D drive and I get about 931gb of available space.
And when you said AZATHOTH I thought about ASTAROTH from Soul Calibur. XD

That's probably more to do with how they count the bytes - HDD manufacturers count a Kilobyte as 1000 Bytes, Computers count a Kilobyte as 1024 Bytes. Over 2TB it becomes quite noticeable.

So my USB Flash Drive is both 16GB and 14.9GB - both are correct.

Thank you DuneFishUk for explaining how space works. I had no idea how it really worked. I have a better understanding now. Thanks :]
