Another update - just tidied a few things up. Still need to add in the "dark arts" details and figure out her shinpads. Going for the loose and messy look so not a lot more to do on the rendering side.

Some feedback - feel free to ignore ofc.

Klesk: Nice piece. One thing though is that the cloak on the mid-right looks a bit awkward - could do with being simplified or more angular here maybe.

Rusty: Superb as always - artwork and design.

Phaethon: Really like this design, especially the mix of time periods.

Noah Bradley: Nicely rendered, but it would be hard to tell what the character was all about without the background. She's pretty much just a schoolgirl walking through some creatures at the minute.

    Soupandbutter: Very good costume design.

Twentyone: Similar to Noah, without the zombie hands there would be no way of telling she's anything other than a schoolgirl. Even with the zombies in there it's more like she's a schoolgirl who is being attacked rather than the one who raised them from the dead. Another point is that the lighting setup is pretty weak and all there's no hard edges at all - Maybe some cast shadows or simplified cloth rendering could help here. There's some nice foreshortening and anatomy in there though.

DrewS: Nice stylisation, but again it would be hard to tell that she's into the black arts if there was no background.

Blackcherry: I really like the sketch, hope you manage to finish.

Staticpen: Beautiful image. My only moan would be that the character design and background is a tad happy/bright for necromancy.

Sentinel: Beautiful image and use of colour. Works very well as an illustration.

Some really nice entries so far but the painful thing (like most weeks) is that character design seems to take a back-seat a lot of the time. If you need to draw in a police station to show that the character is a police officer then the design probably needs rethinking. Sorry to moan, I just feel that focusing on backgrounds and camera angles and fancy lighting is useful in other areas but isn't going to improve your character design - which is what chow is all about right?

I'm really impressed by the process I'm seeing in the other entries. Amazing and inspiring.

Finalizing lines, and now I'm getting into details, keeping it black and white, sort of evoking an early 19th century engraving...

Moving further along with this odd experiment... went ahead and put in the frame, as well.
I'd like to come up with some bizarre and creepy things for her to be carrying on her chatelaines, near the school badge... bones? tiny lizards? not sure what would show up anyway.

Starting to block in a really rough background. The stacked book thing is being used by a lot of folks, but I think that is because it makes sense. So what the hell, I'm gonna use it too I think the perspective is a bit wonky, but I may just have to go with it cause I'm running out of time

There is still a bunch of rendering to do and then color.

So... sad story. My file got jacked up, somewhere along the lines turned itself into a "JPEG" though it still functioned as a PSD file, then when I tried to reopen it, it gave me an error message "Invalid JPEG marker is found" and could not open the file... Probably my fault, but im pissed regardless.

Moral of the story, make sure your working files are properly marked.

I was able to salvage the flat image by opening it in Preview, so this is as far as I got... and probably will get. F(*$# A**()_!!!!

Took me ages to get off the ground with this. Didnt know what direction I was going for a while, hence no entries yet.
Heres where I am now with my design. The main drive Im trying to put behind this character is, to be the best necromancer out of a school of necromancy youve got to be fucked up in the head. And just totally obsessed and weird. You dont just dable in bringing the dead to life.

At this stage Ive been looking at it for too long. Im not really sure how it comes across. I was resisting the uniform for a while and I decided on a decorative cloak which I hope comes across as having pracitcality as well as required attire. See thats what got me, I cant imagine a professor of necromancy (or whatever you wana call them) saying hey, put down that dead guy and put on your uniform! Or its no resurrecting the deceased for you!
How or never that is the brief and this is what makes it challenging
Any advice? tips, critiques, rants! Anything at all id super appreciate!

That's me done. The general idea behind this design is "practical necromancy" - what would Rosie wear/wield while taking part in her practical sessions?

Spiked shin-guards and chains to fend off any undead hands trying to grab her from beneath the ground.

    Spellbook for summoning the dead.

Shovel for digging up cadavers and defending herself if things get nasty.

Mask to block out the stench of the dead (decided to lose it in the final).

    Some feedback:

Malakuko: True what you say! Good to see thought behind the design. I really like the leather outfit and head-dresses too. Thanks for visiting the blog btw

Vertebra: Sorry to hear about the file trouble. Good entry all the same, with some well done anatomy.

Noshot: Nicely done. One thing I'd recommend though is moving the book's edge slightly so that it overlaps the bottom of her arm more, or give it a gap inbetween. It might be quite confusing visually otherwise.

    hey everyone,

it's been YEARS since I've entered any CA activity, but I was itching for something to doodle last night and came around the weeklies to see what activities you guys had going on!

Here's a quick doodle on my rosie so far--it's really rough so far, and I might not make the deadline, but ah, who cares, this is for fun : )

Also, I get that I'm supposed to post WIPS here...but if I do finish, where is this 'FINALS' thread all the instructions talk about?

veskau - that's pretty sweet. I like your loose approach, mixed with tighter detail work on the face. came out well!

sunroamer- I think the egg shape behind her isn't reading too well..i think it might need less 'form' to read as magic. Her legs look a little short too. But I'm digging the overall back lighting. I was thinking of hitting my own piece with a rim/back light, and looking at yours I think I might go back and work a second light source into my own piece.

malakuko - So, let me get this straight, you're making her a bit more butch/less sexy so that she's a bit more capable of combating her creations? Right now she reads kind of as stock barbarian, like someone who would fight undead but not necessarily raise/rule them. I think maybe a shift in color palette, or some more dramatic peripheral cues (like the green flask thing and the bones) would help her read as 'necromancer'.

    Lightbulb new Wip! on Rosie...

GREAT ADVANCE ON EVERY ONES ENTRIES THIS LOOKS EXITING!

    THANKS FOR COMMENTS GUYS! ..

So I was not very exited about the Rosie I was working, and several things happen in my mind that inspired me to change directions again! I need this to be fun and something I will enjoyed so I make a very inspired composition the Work of Alphonse Mucha and Art Nouveau, with the easy way to make a simple bull┤s eye to frame your character, It did great for my little time that I could deliver to this CHOW since ; looks good you can add detail to describer her best on her surrounding frame and you never lose the feeling of importance on the main character! so I think fits best the bill! plus her uniform looks good in here! and I got that spider as hat as I want it!
I┤ll keep working in her later! now I have more work to do! ... sorry for loading the wips all together but I had to for my short periods of free time!

work in progress still...if there is any critics and comments I would be very much welcome !

    Axel's Gallery Art you?

SunRoamer: Hopefully not! I think I gave her enough length to be able to walk while also being able to leg-grapple those busy undead hands.

Working through my entry, not sure how I'm going to make the jump to color (testing new workflows to see if I can figure out how to work faster...it's not working ). Crits/comments welcome of course.

Carnifex! - Hey man! How've you been? Good to see a familiar face!

Here's my progress on this so far. The left hand is all sorts of wonky right now, and there's some composition issues, but it's coming a long.

I know this is the exact opposite of what this site is about (digital painting, serious, realism), but holy wow on a sticklet, alexalonso's new piece would look fantastic as clean lineart, flatly colored, arranged as an art nouveau tablet.

Just sayin', in case you have 15 minutes left over after doing your thing

    My ConceptArt sketchbook.

My sketch blog, where I post drawings and talk about them, sometimes interesting.

carnifex - I've been well.Moved twice, got married, been working at the same company now for 3 and a half years...can't complain though! I'll have to stop by your sketchbook soon and see what you've been up to!

rusty- hey man! oldschool CA indeed

here's some more progress on mine. It'll be tight to hit the deadline (still have quite a bit of work to do on that arm and skirt), and I'll probably not get the chance to give it a more refined rendering pass, but it is what it is.

I was going for a 70s afroqueen necromancer student, for some reason.
