I know there's supposed to be no such thing as a stupid question...

...but we've been getting some real doozies lately. Aah, the beginning of summer vacation.

What is the best pencil to use?

    The best paper?

    The best ink pen?

What paint does Elwell use? I want to use that paint.

Just trying to introduce myself here. It's my style.

Speaking of, it was pretty hysterical to see how many people went up to Wes or Marko at the Dallas workshop and asked "What brand of pencil do you use?"

In the face of stupid questions one may either attempt to impose reason and understanding unto the ignorant or supersede and ridicule said stupidity with your own brand of the fatuous and vacuous. I find the latter far more entertaining.

why do I treat girls as objects and then start threads on art forums about how I treat them as objects?

why are people say squares are round?

I don't think there's a problem in wanting knowledge, or asking those in the know to share, but the real problem is found when the asker has no self-motivation and is asking the askee's to basically upload the knowledge automatically into their heads and make them "1337" overnight. Real and genuine questions don't generally attract this kind of negative stigma, as long as you phrase correctly and have already exhausted other avenues of research.

edit: I think I've been duped by a stupid question! But my point still stands

One time I was teaching a ceramics course, and an elderly woman with "one wheel in the sand" was trying to glue a broken piece back together - a piece where the clay hadn't been properly wedged, or pressed together. It was something she'd done at home, a little sculpted face/mask. And get this, it hadn't even been fired yet! The whole thing was falling apart. She was gluing it together with some Elmer's student glue, she'd bought at CVS.

I tried explaining that you need to fire a work first, that Elmer's glue would just burn off, and that the work was dried out and broken, she'd have to start over. Considering the quality, it'd only take about fifteen minutes of work. But, she wouldn't hear any of it, and just kept gluing all through class, mumbling to herself like Mr. Bean...

    You can't fix stupid.

Yeah and you were doing airbrush flames on motorcycles -- we've all been there so being holier than thou doesn't cut it.

Are we just whining because it's hot or are there any purpose dwelling between the lines? :]

I think that's a common thing amongst beginners and if they're inexperienced enough to ask questions like that I wouldn't knock them for it. The more I learnt as an artist the more I realised that brand and tool alone won't make a person skilled.

It's the person and their experience that makes or breaks a picture.

    Super relevant nostalgia moment of the day;

So early in college myself and 2 freinds were walking along talking about super cool things like how strong super heroes are. one friend was adament that batman was the best and could easily pummel all others. It went on and on until he said Batman could take on anyone, to which I asked "What about Zues?" Without thinking he said "but zues isn't real."

Other friend and I had a real good laugh
