    Dragonfyre's Sketchbook

Ok, here's my sketchbook. I'll try to add more often and post brief descriptions on each one.

This is Queen Coraline from one of my game concepts. She rules over a tribe of aqua sprites with her husband. Her daughter Leanna is on my site.

    Dryad Witch

This is my "Dryad Witch" or "Wood Witch", whichever you prefer. I'll admit her right arm needs work and I clearly suck at tree roots. Try to picture a trail of magic leading from the gem on her staff to her hand.

And, yes, I realize her right arm is in some awkward position and the wand is a bit gaudy. I'll try to fix that at some point.

    Wyvern

A wyvern in profile. I had planned on giving him back spikes but scrapped it. I'm not sure I like this particular design. Might experiment with others later.

    Nycteros

This is Nycteros, another game character of mine. Clearly he's evil. He can transform into a giant serpent (note the eyes in the background) and his snake tattoo is also his pet and can peel itself from his skin to become 3 dimensional.

He needs to be redone too. Dang, how I suck.

    Doom hound

I'm proud of this though I probably shouldn't be. Doom hounds are found in a lot of European lore. They sit by roadsides and seeing one is a bad omen. I've heard different versions of them but I always pictured them as black wolves with dragon or bat wings.

    Hey, Dragonfyre!

I think that your characters are a little bit on the stiff/awkward side. One thing I'd recommend is spending some time letting yourself loosen up! If you aim for a really precise line right from the start, you might be locking yourself in to something really stiff. Maybe do some loose gesture drawings of dynamic poses to see how to make the figures flow in a way that's less static for you.

He means don't make your lines so rigid. Remember, the human body's are made of fibers that tighten and loosen to move, unless your characters are wooden. In that case, you're spot on.

Study anatomy, its all over the internet and if you have a library near you there are tons of anatomy books that can help you with the form of your characters.

Keep posting 'cause I want to see your progress.

    Studies

Here are just some sketches of sticks in random poses. I didn't bother doing any head counting or anything I just did what came to my head.

Then there's my male proportion study. The insane head-counting, measuring and all.

Last are random male torso poses. I figure if I can master the male torso I can do anything because drawing the torso seems to be hardest for me.

Nice to see you doing some studies, good start! Once you get into studying the actual muscles of the torso I think what you're learning will really come together.

What if I don't want a certain character to have a muscular torso? Not everyone is fit and trim after all.

Even people who aren't muscular still have muscles. Understanding that balance is apart of what makes studies so helpful.

Ok. Redid most of the studies I did last time but more toned and refined. I think I'm starting to get the hang of it!
