    Yeti Ball's Sketchbook

Hey all. Have a bit of free time so I though I would set up a Sketchbook thread. Please, do leave comment and crits. I hope this can become a regular place for me to post my work and chart my progress.
Lets see... to start... some new stuff and some older stuff...

Wow, no one has commented here yet? I love them. You can tell who everyone is but they are exaggerated enough to create interest.

How do you choose what aspect of the face to exaggerate while keeping the look of that person?

    Welcome,
Good start on your sketchbook. Would love to see some more finished stuff. But these are already very good. Maybe a little more detail or a few more rendering steps would help. Overall, cool! Keep it up, show us more!

    update

Hey Thanks for the comments Jeris and Ivan... as far as the charactures go i basically do some quick thumbnails and try to just get figure out which features work best when exaggerated. I'll see if i can find some of the process sketches for these two and upload em.

I going to start to try staying after work for a couple hours a day and do some sketching. Its seems like the only way I can really focus.
Otherwise its; leave the office, catch a bus, go home, spend time catching up with the girlfriend, cook dinner, relax a bit, do dishes and clean up... and by that time its often tooo easy to just kick it watching a movie or something.

Here is my first update Monday June 21 2010. Some sketches I did based on Posemaniac poses.

    UPdate

I guess I didn't update yesterday although I did sketch after work. The scanner in office has gone missing so I guess that stuff will have to wait, but here's something I did today.

Update June 24 2010... sketch for this weeks Chow, a character for the fighting videogame The Ultimate World Tournament. He is a noodle guy from China.

Hey your stuff is really great and I love the noodle guy. Also loved seeing the sketch up process for him - something I need to do more of. Good talent here.

thanks for stopping by my sketchbook yetiball, really appreciate it.

You've got some real nice line work on your anatomy studies (and some nice dynamics in there too). Nothing much to add there, other than keep it up!

(one thing if I may say, maybe softening those hard hatching lines a little might give your images more harmony. they kind of distract against some of the nice accents that your crazy line brush lays down, as well as some of the forms you've got)

don't take that badly, you've got some awesome stuff in here.

look forward to seeing where you go with this book.

pps: That furry brush, I'm guessing its like a wild beast to use, just keep trying to tame it. Your monster on the right on your 22.8.10 post, and your pissed off chimp look shit hot. Totally nailed it with that brush.

    Old Sketches

Okay, so I've been doing some house cleaning on some of my portfolio websites, and found this old sketch sheet from July 16 2007! This was the summer after I graduated from school and was looking for a job. I ended up doing some concept work for some guy who wrote a comic book, which I don't ever think went anywhere.

I like these characters though, the guy was some down on his luck vet.

Hey man! Yeah I'm about to head back to RIT really soon, definitely excited. It's difficult to judge the illustration dept there yet, freshman year didn't include any of the illustration courses, so I'lll find out this year! Based on some of the work I've seen from upperclass illustration, I'd say it's hit or miss depending on the individual student and their personal work ethic. The ID department looks very impressive however. I've been speaking to some of the professors to try and take as many ID courses as I can that would pertain to an entertainment design track, which they teach at Art Center College of Design. Combination of illustration and id. So far the graphic viz course looks very promising with it's focus on sketching and freehand perspective and such. I'll be in that with Roy Cripps. How is that class? And are there any other courses or professors I should be looking out for?

Also, great sketchbook, I'm digging the brushwork on some of that black and white stuff, very loose and gestural.

    Dump time...

Thanks for the props The Original [E], Naidy & andres333.

Here are some sketches I did this afternoon (the tanks, trucks and the warm up perspective stuff, which are based heavily on Paul Richards' THUMB WAR : Design Iteration Combat Simulation) and some older sketches of my girlfriend.
Shes actually much better looking then these would suggest, but they were done rapidly while sitting in the back of a Shanghai taxi, which, as you might imagine, can be a pretty herky jerky environment do draw in!

Enjoy and please feel free to comment!

PS... Sorry for the low quality, these were digitalized with a camera in my poorly lit dining room and then edited in Paint on my netbook... no Photoshop on this little guy.

Nice updates man, sweet to see some ID looking stuff, especially that tank done with markers. I dig it. Toy design also sounds pretty freaking sweet.

Yeah I've definitely considered switching majors, and I'm still keeping the option open. At the moment though, it's looking like there are more classes I'm interested in through the illustration cirriculum (character design, fantasy illustration, anatomical figure drawing, etc) and it seems more economical to take electives from the ID department. The ID instructors so far seem very lenient, so I don't think I should have too much of a problem getting into the classes. Also attempting some of the contests from the gnomon workshop to try and get my hands on a few dvds, namely scott robertson's, which could be a great help.

Thanks for the advice, I'll let you know how things turn out!

    Update for Sept 8th

So I have not been updating this as much as I'd like, but recently I've taken several freelance jobs that eat up most (all) of the free time I have after work.

Anyway, these are sketches I did for this weeks Chow. Its a re-imagining of an old 8bit game character... This one is from a Fire Emblem game, I believe.

I'm not really happy with how the second, tighter sketch is coming, I feel like its lost something from the first. Also i know the armor is wonky. I may scrap this design and try a different direction.
    As always feedback is appreciated!

PS. Yes I just realized how phallic that armor hanging off her belt looks!
