Another mood shot, though I'm not too happy with this yet. The PS file is already plastered with notes, but feel free to add any of your own, I could really use some =) (I'm mostly talking design of the room wise, not composition and illustrative qualities - though of course pointers in that area are also always welcome)

Plus some sketches for Sabriel, still a bit undecided on hair and general look, she doesn't always have the feel I'd like her to have. Aaand some line exercises on the other page, let's see if I can repeat that page of lines every once in a while and see if I've improved.

Yesterday's and today's work. Did some cat studies since Mogget is a cat and I have next to no experience drawing them, and I made some thumbs for a style test. I tried sketching one of them out beforehand but I gave up halfway through... Too many wonky things going on anyway. Last image is still a wip, I'm still looking for more of a contrast between "living skin" and other objects while keeping all other elements interesting, maybe I should go more towards art nouveau or Klimt.

Some different things. I've also been working on the layout of the final product (an artbook similar to the look of the Pixar/Disney artbooks), so I'll probably post some previews later, when there's something worthwhile to show.

    those cat gestures are great

notes on the colosseum arena thing: the values of the bright parts of the rocks in the background might be a bit too bright? when i squint my eyes and look at it, they pop a bit too much

    keep it up!

    superhmerh Thank you! =)
aks9 Thank you! And yes, you're right about the rocks. The dark rocks and light snow are a heavy contrast for the rest of the room, which should be made out of ice. I'm probably going to try another approach later on, inspired by Gaudi's Sagrada Familia =) I should be able to incorporate the rocks better that way, and make the environment more interesting.

Little update, I've mostly been working on the book layout today. I've revisited the image from a few days ago to try and make the Mordicant more art nouveau-ish and increase the flow of the image.

I decided to try some quick warm-up studies before working, to keep learning, and I included a preliminary image for the general look of the Sendings. Her face should probably be way less solid so you can see the folds behind her face, so I'll incorporate that into a later version. Background texture is from here btw.

the brown skirt figures are really nice, and would perhaps be easier on the eyes if placed on a more mid-tone background instead of pure white. the simple block strokes on the left figures arms are interesting, as are the patterns on the right-figures arms, though a bit noisy.

thanks for your comments in my sb they were really helpful

aks9 Thanks for your suggestions, and no problem at all =) The book this is for will have a toned background, so I think it'll be easier on the eyes. And yea, the patterns should probably blend into her skin better, since that's the structure they're built on, but shouldn't be too inconspicuous either. I'll have to do some more experimenting to find the balance.

A backlog of work I still needed to post. I kept putting it off and forgetting, but I'm leaving for a week tomorrow, so now's a good chance to upload it all at once.

aks9 Thank you! Whether I just work by hand or work with a 3D model depends on my needs =) If I'm just sketching thumbnails for ideas I usually freehand it for the creative flow, but when I'm working on a more polished image and I'm looking for a nice angle, I usually make a blockout in 3D to make quick iterations on perspective and camera angle before I commit to something.

The book project is my graduation project, since I'll be done with college in November. I've taken the Abhorsen series by Garth Nix and I'm making an art book for a hypothetical movie based on those books, similar to what Pixar and Dreamworks release together with the release of their films.

Wow, your colours are amazing! They really pop right out!

I really like the body language sketches from #159 and all the environment/building paintings. Plus the first image in #157 and the cat sketches done with brushes(?).

it's not the end that matters but the journey

ilmenhin Thank you! Honestly, I think colors are still the biggest challenge for me. The cat sketches were done with a sumi-e brush in Painter, if I remember correctly =)

    --

Storyboarding work for today, minus the first 7 frames, which I did yesterday. There's one black frame since I accidentally drew over that frame for another one, but I'll have to redraw that one tomorrow >_> The scene is almost done, I 'm about 75% there. Big biiig file, sorry about that.

Thereís the last of it, the whole scene is in storyboard now. It was a good exercise, it made me see some objects I was still missing and made me notice some placement issues in terms of props. Iíll probably start a revision of the room tomorrow, while itís all still fresh =) Do you guys have any remarks about the storyboards?

Hm, I should start uploading some color stuff again.

Here's some stuff from friday and today; a little lighting study with some new elements added to Sabriel's room, a more serious close up portrait of Sabriel, and some more sketches for Touchstone. I think the one where he's still a figurehead depicts him the way he "feels" to me (in terms of the mix of being a boy and a man, not to buff or too round a face, but not too thin either, etc.) the most accurately, but I still need to figure out how that would translate to other angles of the face, haha.

Nothing was landing on paper as I wanted it to today, so I have one image for today: the Mordicant in the woods while he's chasing Sabriel, who turned out a bit more realistic and a bit less silhouet-y than I'd intended.

A few things for today; some color samples for Lirael, a new idea for her hair with some color coding to simplify the structure of the braid visually, and a sketch of Touchstone I'll tweak later on.

Two sketches, one as an elaboration on the char design for Touchstone, the other a scene where Sabriel first discovers that Touchstone is capable of more than petty magic (I think). I sculpted a superquick base model for Touchstone in 3D as well, but in the end it's not as useful as I thought it would be.

Some Stilken/Lirael work for today. I figured since the Stilken is going to be a naked woman, she'd be allowed some ornate, complicated hair to make her more interesting. I'm contemplating some tattoos or marks of some kind, but I'm not so sure about those.

Trying a different style with Sabriel, something I started doodling on my phone in the train, and trying to incorporate a bit more abstract things into stylized realism with Touchstone to try and loosen up my options in composition.

An initial design for the stained glass in the Abhorsen dining hall. I was toying with the option of doing one image spread over all the windows or having something different on every window (like going from the Free Magic Age to the building of the wall and the creation of the Charter, for example) That might be a lot more interesting to look at. I'll pay more attention to line quality and colours with the next design I do, I haven't done any research on technique or anything yet.

Bit of a dump again. I neglected to post here for a few days since the site's been down for me a lot.

Sketches and more development. Revamp of a style test I did for Sabriel a while back, some silhouette tests for the seven bells that she carries, some sketches for the the tree in the chamber where Lirael fights the Stilken (I'm still not sure if I want it to be an oak tree or a weeping willow), another stained glass design for the great hall in Abhorsen house, and a sketch from something I found in my sketchbook from a while back, though I haven't looked up the scene in the book again, so it might be totally mismatched. But it makes for a relatively pleasing little image nonetheless, I think.

One more for tonight; a bit of an adapted version of the Observatory, trying to get the structure a bit more art nouveau-ish.

    aks9 Thank you!

latus Thanks! Doing that one without lineart would take a lot more edge definition though, haha. I might touch it up if I use it for key art to describe the character, but I'm guessing no since my idea of what she should look and feel like has changed a bit already. We'll have to see though =)

    -----

I swear that first Abhorsen's House looked a lot less like the first concept I made of it when I started blocking it all out, ugh... The rest's all more sketching and figuring things out. The last one's the Stilken if she were human, I think.
