Here's a newer version of my self portrait. I painted some colors into the different areas of the face. Still I can't get it to look sharp, I just have not enough knowledge of light, shapes, form and the absence of light - shadow. More studies incoming!
This Singer Sargent copy took me about 2 hours, focusing on light, shadow and tones.
All in all I think I made good progress in 2013 so far, even if I couldn't spend as much time studying art as I wanted. Have just too much projects (3) for my university running right now. But as all ever - I'll work it out

Hey there Charmer! Woo
Thanks for commenting on my sketchbook.
So for advice I'd say you should try and work more on your values. I see you are trying,
but your colors seem very simple and not much variation.
I just found out today that there are many many colors due to shadows and backlights in my face o _ o
In #666post (woah cool number), are you doing the self portrait from life or photo?
The photo distorts some colors and if you even just stare at yourself in the mirror a little you'll notice hopefully a bunch of diff hues. if you look long enough
You could also try a dimmer lamp so that there is less light/ more variation of dark vs light
Plus you could try and see how your portraits look in greyscale during coloring to see how wide a range of values there really are.
Your edges are much neater than mine though.
How do you do it?? XD if there is an answer to that ack
Good luck! And I hope I was able to help you :3
I'll keep watching your progress okiay

Hey, thanks for dropping by my SB and commenting. You've got some good studies and sketches going on, just be sure to keep your constructions and perspective in mind while drawing and also to break your shadows and lights into manageable groups before rendering. The simpler the read from the very beginning of a paintings the better! Keep at it.

Hey, thank you both very much for your comments!
Thanks Pou! I just try to use sharp brushes (simple round brush and a opaque chalk brush), so the edges are sharper all the time. Also you can use a hard round eraser, too
The self portrait started a while ago from life but when I had the proportional sketch down I used a photo because this has waaay more consistent light than my bathroom, also I didn't want to paint in my bathroom with my tablet and pc. :-D Right now I do some tonal studies of the old masters and comic book artists because both kinds of artists use not very much different colors all the time, so I can say I'll do a Diego Velasquez Master study, but just with a limited amount of time (30 minutes for example) and just focus on form and color/tones. Not on details or very smooth gradation of the used color.
I'll try to push my values more, that's what I have a problem
with for a while now. I'll get better, no matter what or how hard the way will be. In my sketchbook I'm almost only
working in Pen & Ink with microns and a pen brush, that helps for values I guess.
Jep, I go back to the basics and draw a lot more "through" than before, trying to get sketches RIGHT before I try to make them BEAUTIFUL. Helps also. More incoming in the next time.
Here's a new tonal study, original by Diego Velasquez. 30 Minutes, just values/color. Like all the time: everything mixed by eye, no color picking!

Sooo there we go, lots and lots of work in the last time. Here you can see two Illustrations I did for myself, just the random things that came out of my head mixed up with my the style things that come out of me also. Some kind of poster/apparel design things.
Currently I am drawing a lot but not really in the aspect of quality but quantity, storyboarding and stuff and I'll post more in a few weeks when finally the semester is over and I have more room to breathe.
The head is just completely from my mind, just trying to nail shapes and forms better, focused on the nose and everything took about 30-40 minutes.
Also I am painting stills on my iPad sometimes and feel that I've grown artistically so much in the last few weeks. Can't really tell you why but everything feels like it falls more into place.
Now I need to do a 3d animation short film of 20-30 seconds and I really have no idea what I should go for, it needs to be a dialogue of 2 characters and I have to come up with an alternative story, make a storyboard/animatic and animate it all in Autodesk Maya. That'll be a hole bunch of work.
2014, there we go!

WOWWWWWW I'm in love with the 3D figure!!!! I like your masterstudies as well. Not too mixed hues I like that. Ah I really want to try drawing on an ipad but it's too expensive for me to even consider.
Glad to see you back and keep it up okay~ Happy 2014 ^___^

Just a random 20 minute Landscape Sketch and some studies, I didn't have enough time to seriously paint since I have soooo much stuff going on for the university right now. Character Design, 3d Visualization and an animation short film with 2 characters consisting of 20 seconds, so freaking much work

Your latest portraits are getting better keep improving like that you are on your way man! Maybe i would concentrate on just value for now, to learn better about rendering forms without having colors to distract you, and also give those pieces a bit more time, it is usuful to sketch but you have also to try push stuff over your limits sometime
Keep it up

Boom I'm finally in holiday mode - there we go! Everything from mind except the Frazetta Study and very few skulls.
I love: Bridgemans Box method of setting characters up and my Lamy Pen and Sketchbook. I feel good, like I'm on the right track because I can clearly see I'm slowly getting better/drawing gets a bit easier.
