college or study at home? help, opinions needed thank you.

Hello I currently considering whether or not to either go back to college to do illustration or to just practice and improve at home. I already have three years of education focused towards doing all facets of game art but I want to specialise in concept art. Would it be worth it to go back and do illustration in college or is it better to improve from home?

Answers from personal experience rather than opinion based bias, thank you.

My opinion, based in my personal experience, is that both are great forms of studing, becouse, if you consider doing school, you met friends interested in areas and you can see their development live and real, change ideas in a real enviroment that is very healthy, on the other hand, learn in your house requires more concentration and in art is good to be focused

    Sorry for my poor english

Thanks for comment and advice. I think I will focus on the 'at-home' way of doing things as I need to concentrate. Thanks again.

If I were you... I would move to a more industry dense area and then take a couple classes and use the rest of the time to go to events / study at home.

I will definitely look into that, funds and finance obviously dictate the possbility of moving but it seems like a good idea. Thanks.

    Hi.

I'm currently a 3rd year student in art school, I have a summer job as a concept artist in a small game studio.
I didn't realize it until I had a job doing concept art, but school has aided me far more than I had assumed up until this point. In terms of learning organization, how to talk to people, how to talk about your art articulately, receiving feedback, learning to research, establishing a process... these are all things I've found to be just as important as my drawing skills. Many of these skills I would have been unable to hone if I was just in my room drawing all day.
If you want to work in a studio, you have to be part of a team, and art school offers an excellent simulation of that environment (as long as you take it seriously). Art school might not teach you how to be an amazing artist in the technical sense, especially if you aren't burnin' the midnight oil after class every night. But in my humble experience, it teaches many crucial skills that are oft sorely overlooked.

Thank you for reply and perspective.

I have decided to go it alone at home for a while as I cannot stay another three-four years in college. Already done four and half.

    Thanks once again.
